General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, likened Donald Trump’s effort to hold on to power after the 2020 election to Adolf Hitler, saying the president was preaching “the gospel of the Führer” with his lies about the election being stolen, according to a new book by two Washington Post reporters.
Milley was disturbed by the sight of Trump supporters rallying to his cause in November, calling them “Brownshirts in the streets.” Leonnig and Rucker wrote that Milley “believed Trump was stoking unrest, possibly in hopes of an excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act and call out the military.” The general likened the U.S. to Germany’s fragile Weimar Republic in the early 1930s. “This is a Reichstag moment,” he said, referring to the arson attack on Germany’s Parliament that Hitler used as a pretext to assume absolute power and destroy democracy.
“These guys are Nazis, they’re boogaloo boys, they’re Proud Boys. These are the same people we fought in World War II,” Milley said a week after the attack on the Capitol.

Trump was also stymied by McConnell from being able to appoint many positions. While I agree that the fact he was not a DC insider and really didn’t have any idea what was motivating many appointees, he did have trouble from the very beginning getting people he could trust. He was sabotaged by his very own party who collaborated with democrats to sandbag every move he made.
Milley spent more time worrying about the Army’s new dress uniform than he did about Afghanistan.

The thing is all of Trump’s picks, good and bad, swore an oath to defend this country. Many violated that.
It seems clear now that many people took jobs in the Trump admin solely to undermine Trump and the MAGA agenda. Never Trump blacklisting and Democrat thuggery also made it difficult to staff up.
Trump is not perfect but we must not judge him without taking the bipartisan coup into consideration. Everything political the past 5 years stems from that, IMO. How different might Trump’s admin been had General Flynn been in his WH, etc.
I’ve recently worked for two retired 4 stars, one Air Force and the other Army. They are 100% political creatures - you don’t get that 4th star by merit, you get it by knowing who to suck up to.

It is, but Gen. Milley is a little confused as to what constitutes ‘politics’. Was it politics when Gen. MacArthur cleared the capital of the Bonus Marchers? Was it politics when Marine General Smedley Butler exposed the alleged “Business Plot” against FDR? Seems to me that FDR had a lot of generals and admirals covering his butt.
