Distract, divide and conquer... that’s been the plan cartels have carried out during the past seven months, according to the DEA. A surge of migrants has allowed them to smuggle more drugs than ever before while federal agents are stretched thin. We traveled to a location where cameras don’t often go, right across from an area called Playa Bagdad that has become more lucrative for the cartels. We are talking about Boca Chica, home of the SpaceX control center.
“So why are we here where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf of Mexico? As you can see, you don’t see a crowd of people trying to cross through here. It is very quiet and there’s a fisherman from Mexico right behind me. The reason why is because there’s a different type of law that controls this area on the other side, it’s the law of the cartels," says Yami Virgin.
“So right now we're at the southernmost part of the U.S. We're at a beach called Playa Bagdad, this is where the mouth of the Rio Grande meets the Gulf of Mexico. So as you can see in the background what I have over to my right is the Rio Grande River, meaning the ocean. On the other side is Mexico” says Richard Sanchez, DEA special agent in charge of the Rio Grande Area.
The surge along parts of the river has distracted federal agents from this area and their primary jobs... watch the border, keep illegal immigration down, and some would say most importantly - keep drugs out of the U.S.
Amazingly unlike other parts of the Rio Grande, there is no surge of migrants crossing illegally. As a matter of fact, the people standing just a few feet away from us could just walk across, but they don’t.

(just thought I’d throw that in as a factual aside)
That area of the Texas Border (at the mouth of the Rio Grande, into the Gulf of Mexico), was specifically banned from border wall construction, by language in the appropriations bill. One of five exemptions, it was the largest.
