Extreme heat cooked mussels, clams and other shellfish alive on beaches in Western Canada (only 9.55 years left)

(CNN) - The devastating heat wave that ravaged British Columbia last week is being blamed for a massive die-off of mussels, clams and other marine animals that live on the beaches of Western Canada.

Christopher Harley, a professor in the zoology department at The University of British Columbia, found countless dead mussels popped open and rotting in their shells on Sunday at Kitsilano Beach, which is a few blocks away from his Vancouver home.

Harley studies the effects of climate change on the ecology of rocky shores where clams, mussels and sea stars live, so he wanted to see how the intertidal invertebrates were faring in the record heat wave that hit the area on June 26-28.

Christopher Harley estimates that a billion mussels, clams and other animals may have died from the heat.

"I could smell that beach before I got to it, because there was already a lot of dead animals from the previous day, which was not the hottest of three," he said. "I started having a look around just on my local beach and thought, 'Oh, this, this can't be good.'"

The next day, Harley and one of his students went to Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver, which he has been visiting for more than 12 years.

"It was a catastrophe over there," he said. "There's a really extensive mussel bed that coats the shore and most of those animals had died."

Unprecedented heat

Mussels attach themselves to rocks and other surfaces and are used to being exposed to the air and sunlight during low tide, Harley said, but they generally can't survive temperatures over 100 degrees for very long.

Anyone else thinkin' lemon wedge and cocktail sauce?

An analysis by more than two dozen scientists at World Weather Attribution found that the heat wave "would have been virtually impossible without the influence of human-caused climate change."

Sure, but nature still sucks.

So a heat wave in western Canada must be due to global warming. Got it.

OMG!!!! And there will never, ever, ever, ever be many mussels, clams and other marine animals near the shores of British Columbia, ever again!!!! /sarc

I watch Golf. I have watched European golf tournaments this SUMMER. In all of them the golfers have been wearing long sleeve warm pull overs; unlike the American venues. It seems as the Pacific northwest of North America has had a warmer than usual summer this year, I think western Europe has had a cooler summer.

They say a La Nina weather cycle in the Pacific Ocean area this year drove more moist warm air further north this year. It may have consequentially driven more cooler north polar air down on northern Europe.

Everything that happens is due to global warming...... Well, let me backtrack a step. Everything that happens is due to racism along with global warming. Once you learn and accept that...

Or was it an algae bloom like red tide (e brevi)?

No? Then melt some butter, soy sauce and wasabi and chow down!

Learn to depend on solar panels and wind turbines for energy generation while you waste your cost-effective LNG sources.
But don’t bitch about the heat.

sometimes i’ll cook blue crabs clams, oysters, and shrimp on a smoker...

i’m originally from maryland...

steaming blue crabs, clams, oysters, and shrimp using a mixture of one part water, one part beer, one part apple cider vinegar and old bay seasoning is good too...

i use the same technique to steam broccoli and brussel sprouts...

These clams and mussels cause lotsa problems on boats, shore lines, bridges. They are in most cases invasive.

They're trying to figure out how to get rid of them...I think in Lake Ontario along the pier in the city. They're obstructing the flow of water and causing pollution and ruining the beach.

Yeah I’m wondering what’s wrong with that? No need to use fossil fuels to cook them, that’s good right?
