The search is on for the person or persons who abandoned a large python on the side of Del Monte road near the Marina landfill.
“Just sad truly sad both that the animal suffered and that somebody would do that,” said Charlie Sammut, director of the Monterey Zoo who responded to the original call of an abandoned snake.
Sammut says the snake was a reticulated python, measuring 17-feet and was approximately 10 years old.
“It counted on us for a long time it counted on someone for a long time only to be let down at the end,” said Sammut.
The roughly 150-pound snake was found in a small box container on the side of Del Monte road Tuesday afternoon with a note attached ‘don't open big snake inside.’ Sammut believes the snake was alive when it was dumped, the box it was in had four holes drilled in it and the inside was lined with insulation to keep it warm. Sammut believes whoever left it, wanted the snake to be discovered.
“Maybe it was somebody who was trying to get rid of it and couldn't so they assumed by sticking it on the side of the road it would just find a home somehow but who does that, someone who abuses animals clearly,” said Sammut.
Abandoning a dead or live animal is a crime and that's why the SPCA for Monterey County is now involved and looking into the matter.
The SPCA is also an open admissions shelter which means they'll take in your pet or animal you can no longer care for.
“Please give us a call let us know if you have an animal you can no longer keep please do not abandon the animal drop them off in the middle of road somewhere and hope that someone will pick it up, be responsible call the SPCA and you can always surrender to us,” said SPCA humane officer Jacob Duarte.
On Wednesday Sammut who properly buried the snake on zoo property said people need to know what they're getting into when they decide to raise a python which are legal to buy in California.
The lesson here is for people to do a little homework know what you're getting into this is not just a pet this a full-time hobby this is serious stuff,” said Sammut.
The SPCA wants to hear from anyone who may have information regarding the python, and you can choose to remain anonymous.

Screw the python. I do hope they catch and publicly identify the SOB who did this.
Whoever is caught for this should say they thought it was a baby that survived an abortion attempt.

Snake had a right to live it’s snake life somewhere outside of captivity . I don’t like snakes, but hate to see any wild animal abused and neglected.
When I lived on a golf course close to the Everglades, snakes would occasionally turn up on the course or even in the pool. We had a number to call for snake experts to come get it and release it back into the Glades. I guess too many live there now and are killing all the other small animals.
Snake had a right to live it’s snake life somewhere outside of captivity.
