Leah Davis Lokan, 65, of Chico, California, was on a long-distance bicycling trip and had stopped in the western Montana town of Ovando when she was killed early Tuesday, said Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials as they provided more details about the attack.
Lokan was killed on the bear’s second visit to the site where she and two fellow bicyclists were camping near the post office, officials said.
The approximately 400-pound (181 kilogram) grizzly first awakened the campers about 3 a.m., officials said. They took food out of their tents, secured it and went back to sleep, they said.

Not. too. smart.
Her last words as her friend tried in vain to pull her from the gator's jaws, just before she was dragged under ... "I guess I'll never do that again."
My sis and hubby like to hike and recently bought a new airstream to camp in
Sis deathly afraid a bear is going to gnaw through the aluminum walls and eat them
Took 6 months to get, but BIL now keeps a .454 Casull handy
Sounds like they did things right…they had had food in their tents and removed it after the bear’s first visit, and in any case, they were camping practically in town.
But bears have lost their fear of humans and gotten a lot more aggressive (since in most places, you’re not allowed to shoot them anymore).
They wont gnaw through the aluminum sheeting
They might get through the windows, bust or pop them out
Or somehow bust a door lock open
food in their tents
Ovando Ping....
My financial advisor is on such a trip and today he just posted only 50 or so miles from there. Grace.
Sad for the other riders.
Was she a democrat? 140 years ago these people would have thought camping out in Apache country was cool.
Then after the grizzly fly by they went back to sleep. Now forever to be known as “bait”. Some people just lack common sense.
Yeah...no. I’ve spent a lot of time living in tents including in a place with lions and leopards. No food in the tent (Rule # F-ing 1) means no food ever. No candy wrappers, dish towels, empty beer cans, nothing that even remotely is food like. And taking the food out after the visit does absolutely nothing - they might have well smeared fish guts all over themselves.
I know that
She’s been a NYC and SF city girl since we were kids. Just moved to Boise about 10 years ago
I send her every article I see about people getting eaten by bears now to keep her freaked out
It’s what little brothers do
Bears doing what bears do. Protecting their house.
I figured YOU did, :)
Lol
Lol! I used to want a little brother or sister but long ago learned by observation of my cousins that I was extremely blessed to be an only child.

Nope. In bear country you never have food in the tent.
After the first visit you remove yourselves.
