Question for the old timers. Were there freaks in the old days?

Posted on 07/05/2021 9:05:16 PM PDT by MNDude

I was just sitting in a Cub's parking lot waiting for my wife. It seemed there was an endless parade of what I would call freaks-- girls with blue hair and pierced noses, men with dreadlocks and huge inserts into big holes in their ears, women covered with nasty tattoos. You know what I mean.

I realize there has always been unusual people, but if you were alive before the 1960's, do you remember if there was a concept of trying to make one look as idiotic as possible?

Haight&Ashbuy streets in Frisco was Hippie Freak central. I visited it in its heyday and could stop laughing until I left.

Wasn’t Flatbush Greaser central in NYC? I think it was the Bronx.

My grandparents worked hard to get out of the Bronx and move to the Westchester ‘burbs around 1930.

In those 50s and 60s years, we often visited my grandparents in Westchester County and also my Aunt & Uncle in Stamford. We never ventured into the city except one time to see the Rockettes. So I never personally enjoyed the Flatbush greaser culture.

As a general rule no, not even close.

I remember the older generations from time to time saying, “what’s this world coming to” when Elvis came on the scene but that was tame compared to now.

The 60’s hippy movement started but again that wasn’t the same as what’s taking place now.

None of that applies to West Hollywood though, the freaks seemed to congregate there like moths drawn to light bulbs.

"which is what bikers use it for"

Uh, I think the bikers used it to cover the smell of marijuana, as did the hippies. Neither cared about hygiene.

The early outlaw bikers used to be proud of their "originals" (jeans). Their objective was to get them so coated with grease and oil and dirt the jeans could stand up on their own. The more stiff the "originals", the more cool factor. After so much oil and grease they would have a sheen to them. IIRC, they stopped the tradition because of being 86ed from food joints and stores.

The early Outlaws, Hells'Angels, Galloping Goose, Pagans, Top Hatters, etc were really a funky bunch, but mostly harmless against "citizens" until other 1% clubs started up and the competition was on and got worse over the years.

Sidenote: Few people know that most of these early motorcycle clubs started from returning WWII vets. Their lifestyle choice were just to be left alone, be with their buds, and party in the wild. Many of the Biker movies in the 60's portrayed them fairly accurately.

The very start centered around their stripped down Harleys for hill-climbing and dirt oval racing. They needed the adrenaline rush they got in the war. And so was born the Gypsy Tour that still exists today, I think. They didn't turn anti-establishment until LE kept busting them for their rowdiness.

Ask me about the Hollister riot that was the impetus for the movie "The Wild Ones" starring Marlon Brando. I've been there and know the scoop. Yes, I've been a rider all my life, but only once hung out at an outlaw party by invitation. From what I saw, once was enough. I can't describe the disgusting things they did on a family forum.

The late 60's hippies were harmless, until they became teachers and professors in the late 70's. We've had 40 years for them to mess up the current generation, beyond repair.

When I was a kid, wearing jeans to school was considered pretty radical.

The first recorded outlaw motorcycle club was formed in 1935, though the concept didn’t really start hitting big until the late ‘40s. Yeah, freaks have existed for a long time.

We had dirty people, hippie people, bums and a few freaknicks but never like today. Back then they were fringe and had to arrange to congregate with their own kind somewhere.

Now it is mainstream. Grunge, filth and freak and tattoos like a Maori Warriors are everywhere. Just one example is that nobody would ever go to the store in pajamas and fluffy house shoes. I have seen that a lot in our town particularly at Waddlemart.

I have also experienced boomer generation couples at the grocery story with hair so filthy and oily you could grease a tractor with it. They did not just smell they smelled like cows, like manure. There is nobody in this country that does not have access to water and soap to clean themselves. Absolutely disgusting and disgraceful but even worse to me offensive and disrespectful of anyone and everyone.

No, in days past there was not the freak show of today. It is not a statement of uniqueness becasue they are not unique. They are slobs, lazy, filthy, ill-mannered, poorly raised, uncaring, trashy and lacking of respect for others or themselves.

You struck a nerve with me.

and now the daycare kids are raising kids.

Teach your children well. The greatest contribution is the ones you leave behind.

My children are around 40 now. I tried scouts until I realized it was a dumping ground for ritilan laced children. We lived in poster quality upwardly mobile burbs. Sad but I choose to minimize that, quit scouts and focused on my own children all the more so when they confessed they hated being around those kids any more than they had to. I have raised dinosaurs, freaks in their own right but they turned out great.

Ink was for convicts , mostly navy or marines and bikers.

Now skinny effete hipsters ink up or chubby millennials and Xers trying to butch up

I find it silly but it’s their business

I don’t like an abundance of them on women

The most significant difference between the FREAKS of today versus the FREAKS of yesteryear is that today's males are EFFEMINATE and today's females are MASCULINE.

The line between male and female has been BLURRED so badly that NEITHER GENDER IS TOLERABLE!

Bikers use patchouli. I’ve worked with quite a few. And it wasn’t about hygiene, it was about smelling passable because hygiene wasn’t always readily available during weekenders.

The thing about Patchouli oil is you can take about 19 baths and it hangs right in there.
