I was just sitting in a Cub's parking lot waiting for my wife. It seemed there was an endless parade of what I would call freaks-- girls with blue hair and pierced noses, men with dreadlocks and huge inserts into big holes in their ears, women covered with nasty tattoos. You know what I mean.
I realize there has always been unusual people, but if you were alive before the 1960's, do you remember if there was a concept of trying to make one look as idiotic as possible?
Remember the 60’s??
Friggin’ FREAKVILLE all the time. Most of those full time dopers are dead. If they aren’t dead then they are in
institutions—hospitals or prisons.//
You forgot tenured professor at universities /-).
Hare Krishna types
The 60s is where law and order broke down.
But parenting broke down.
Young parents were told not to discipline
Bible: withhold the rod, spoil the child.
That doesn’t mean a rod or stick.. it is the rod of teaching discipline
Before the 60s, during WWII, women went to work to replace the men who were in the war. Many stayed working for the extra income.
During the 1960 change, the gov said you could not pick who you wanted to sell your house to.. so they built 3 bedroom houses that cost 2 to 3 times as much.. trying to control neighborhoods.. and an extra income was almost needed.
I still wonder why do women have children for someone else to raise.
I stayed home.. yes, I was one of those housewives. My kids never came home to an empty house. They came home to fresh baked cookies..and we did without all the extras.
We ate around the table every evening.. we ate home cooked meals.. we bowed our head in a THANK YOU.
Losing all that makes me just SAD... and yes.. respect and honor was lost also
I know this is long but I have so much I wish you younguns knew.. experienced.. used to make your life good.
Sure - but there was a stigma attached to being a freak so they weren’t in everyone’s faces.
Kind of funny how when they gather in large groups of like-freakiness, they say they’re practicing “Individualism”.
Yes. They were recognized as freaks.
Those "freaks" who were acting out in the 1960s and 1970s had a so-called "straight" raising them that contributed to the self-loathing. It's not that alcoholism and child abuse weren't going on, it's that none dared expose how thin the veneer of "upright, moral living" was.
Listen to the life story of one of those "freaks" and you'd be surprised they survived what they went through as children. It's easy to see the behavior of the victims but nearly impossible to accept the actions of the perpetrators because they look so...well, normal.
The Firesign Theater was the best thing to come out of the counter-culture that almost nobody remembers.
It may have been John. I always thought it was Ringo.
WW II did indeed set the stage by providing a lot more career opportunities for women beyond the traditional secretarial and teacher roles. The societal breakdown really got rolling in the mid 60s when the first WW II children were hitting their 20s.
Recently, I couldn’t resist, at the gym, I asked another white haired guy if he got the urge to go get a tattoo on the way home
Witnessed a blanket party right next to me in basic (68). That dude was pummeled into unconsciousness. He wondered what happened to himself in the morning. The TI started the process and he was soon discharged.
Yes, just very long hair, bell bottom jeans with sandals, except in the south they wore boots. (Duane Allman look)
I believe that today’s “freaks” didn’t get enough attention from mom and (if they had one) dad. They were the most outlandish hairstyles.
Once when my (now) ex and I were going into a Walmart we saw a guy is a bright orange outfit that was far too big for him. I started laughing out loud at him and she said it was rude to laugh. I told her that if he didn’t want to be laughed at he shouldn’t go out dressed like a clown.
These “freaks” seem to want a confrontation or to be noticed. I served 27 years in the military and have no tattoos or piercings. I simply want to be left alone.
The kids born during the time the US was involved in WWII, they would be adults.. parents in the 60s.
Our teachers taught respect. Christianity was honored.
The rebellion in our youth was sudden and came from anger. I don’t know which past “damaging sin” prompted such a rebellion.
It seemed to me to come from affluence families first. They dared anyone to object.
It was the youth.. who had not lived enough years to know anything, taking control since parents were busy elsewhere or unconcerned or ignorant also.
That painter
“Freaked” me out!
They were at the zoo
Well, three of my four adult kids are “freaks
then.
No tat’s, no extra piercings outside of ears for the girls.
One son has a tattoo on his leg. It’s an artistic rendition of a biblical reference to honor a buddy of his who died while my son was doing CPR on him. (Drowning)
I’ll not complain about that one.
One word.
Liberaci.
Lol.
