THE GREAT REBELLION: Gen. Patterson’s Column Crossing the Potomac To-day; Eighteen Full Regiments on the March (7/3/1861)
New York Times archives – Times Machine ^ | 7/3/1861

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, July 2.

It has been determined not to forward copies of the President's Message to the Press, for publication simultaneously with its presentation to Congress.

No more appointments will be made in the Army until after Congress has determined whether it will authorize an increase in the regular army.

A member of the Seventy-first Regiment was drowned, to-day, at the Navy-yard.

A member of the Fourteenth Regiment New-York Volunteers, Col. JACKSON, was shot to-day and mortally wounded. One of the men put down an empty musket in his tent, and in a short time picked up what he supposed was the same gun, but which proved to be loaded. In handling the latter, it was discharged. The ball passed through the camp and struck a sick soldier in the hospital tent, wounding him so that he died in a short time.

It is virtually decided that there will be no party caucus held with reference to the organization of the House. Members will vote according to their own predilections.

The contest for the Speakership is very animated -- the friends of each candidate to-night, as last night, being equally confident of success.

You can have no conception of the storm of indignant remonstrance that comes back to Washington, in response to the suggestion of some compromise. There is no member of Congress yet arrived who ventures to hint that he would entertain any proposition, to compromise with the rebels.

GEN. SANDFORD has requested the New-York troops on this side of the Potomac to unite in a grand parade on the morning of the Fourth.

"It is virtually decided that there will be no party caucus held with reference to the organization of the House. Members will vote according to their own predilections."

What do you think, is this more typical of Republicans than Democrats?

"Editorial: A War for the Rights of the People – 4-5

It has sometimes been argued on FR CW threads that Civil War was "really" all about navigation on the Mississippi River.
This editorial suggests that for 12 million Americans then living in the Mississippi's watershed, that may indeed have been their prime concern.

Good evening Professor.

“One of the men put down an empty musket in his tent, and in a short time picked up what he supposed was the same gun, but which proved to be loaded. In handling the latter, it was discharged. The ball passed through the camp and struck a sick soldier in the hospital tent, wounding him so that he died in a short time.”

Okay, what are the odds? Two hundred to one, assuming company strength?

Ever hear of the “golden bebee,” in Vietnam (and other conflicts)?

Color me skeptical.
