A diet higher in fatty fish helped frequent migraine sufferers reduce their monthly number of headaches and intensity of pain compared to participants on a diet higher in vegetable-based fats and oils, according to a new study.
This study of 182 adults with frequent migraines expanded on the team's previous work on the impact of linoleic acid and chronic pain. Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid commonly derived in the American diet from corn, soybean, and other similar oils, as well as some nuts and seeds. The team's previous smaller studies explored if linoleic acid inflamed migraine-related pain processing tissues and pathways in the trigeminal nerve, the largest and most complex of the body's 12 cranial nerves. They found that a diet lower in linoleic acid and higher in levels of omega-3 fatty acids (like those found in fish and shellfish) could soothe this pain pathway inflammation.
…The diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish produced between 30% and 40% reductions in total headache hours per day, severe headache hours per day, and overall headache days per month compared to the control group. Blood samples from this group of participants also had lower levels of pain-related lipids. Despite the reduction in headache frequency and pain, these same participants reported only minor improvements in migraine-related overall quality of life compared to other groups in the study.
…The researchers noted that these findings serve as validation that diet-based interventions increasing omega-3 fats while reducing linoleic acid sources show better promise for helping people with migraines reduce the number and impact of headache days than fish-oil based supplements, while reducing the need for pain medications. They hope to continue to expand this work to study effects of diet on other chronic pain conditions.

Seed oils are poison to all mammals
I used to get brutal cluster migraine headaches - they started at age 30 and stopped when I hit 40. I have no idea why, just glad they’re gone.
Regular congenstion of organisms will ultimately result in regular defecations.
Seed oil is death. Olive, coconut and avocado oil are vegetable and good. So is lard and butter and heavy cream.
Did you get the aura and vomiting?
None of the special drugs worked. Some put me into a very dark state of mind. The drugs made the migraine situation worse.
Had migraines since I was a child. Eventually I found two things that worked if taken immediately... 3-4 shots of alcohol — or — naproxen. The latter preferred, and never together. In either case, the migraine symptoms would mostly be gone in about 30 min. The alcohol obviously has its lingering effects. Naproxen is the main Aleve ingredient. Generic naproxen works just as well — 2 standard size capsules.
Olives and avocados are fruits, coconuts are drupes (seed/nut/fruit). So not sure there are any good vegetable oils.
I know the migraine feeling well. If I can feel it coming on I take 2 Excedrin Extra strength and a triple shot of espresso, halts it. Pain is gone in under an hour but I feel wiped out. I have tried all the other drugs but the only other procedure that helps is seeing my D.O. every 3 months or so. Acupuncture really didn’t help.
Flax seed oil is great.
Yeah, the funky feeling can linger.
Never tried acupuncture, but I hear ya about trying anything that might work.
I would typically get the migraines after a period of stress (healthy mental stress). It would be like... “thank God that’s over with”, then boom — here comes the aura. So I try to maintain continual stress... lol
Stress will trigger them along with a change in barometric pressure or eating too much chocolate. If I am agitated or cranky the night before it means the migraine is rolling into town and by 4am I have knitting needles in my eyes.
Yeah I take a couple different kinds of fish oil. I aim at about 2 grams@ day.
My omega 3-6 ratio came back at 1-1.
Presumably good. However, my cognitive scores decline significantly.
If Naproxin has NSID’s in it—you’re at risk of serious heart issues.
I used to get those medieval fortification auras all the time before I had my heart attack in 2014. Haven't gotten one since. I'm guessing it has something to do with the medications prescribed to heart patients but who knows. Could be that I no longer have a 90% blockage of my left descending artery. Apparently I won a rarely won survival lottery that day
My trigger are MSG and flashes of bright light. Too much MSG and I get vision voids followed by massive headaches. The flashes of light usually result in vision voids and mild headaches.
I had severe migraines since I was a young teen. It got to the point where I had them 24/7 for 5 years without them going away. After they removed my thyroid, they vanished. They returned with a vengeance when they put me on thyroid meds. Four years later, after much suffering, my doc put me on T3 only. No more migraines! They were obviously related, but I would love a detailed explanation as to why that was happening at some point.

BC Powder and shotgun a coke will work in a pinch. That’s what I used as a teenager.
Head would hurt so bad, it was a relief to throw up.
It all stopped in my 20’s.
“BC Powder and shotgun a coke will work in a pinch. That’s what I used as a teenager.”
in the south, WAY back in the day, they called a BC powder in an RC Cola “Dopin’” ...
