THE GREAT REBELLION: EIGHT ADDITIONAL REGIMENTS ARRIVED; Reported Movements of Beauregard’s Rebels; Virginia Chivalry and Guerilla Campaigning (6/30/1861)

WASHINGTON, Saturday, June 29.

A painful alarm was created yesterday morning in the United States General Hospital at Georgetown. A frame building in the rear of the hospital was discovered to be in flames, and in less than a half hour was a sheet of fire. Nothing but a board fence and a barn separated the burning building and the hospital, which contains one hundred and sixty patients. The roof caught fire in three places. Dr. INGRAHAM, one of the surgeons in charge, mounted the ledge of the slanting roof in his stocking feet, and by his incessant exertions in pouring pails of water on the hot shingles, prevented the horrible calamity of the hospital taking fire. The poor sick soldiers owe Dr. INGRAHAM lasting gratitude.

All the foreign missions except the one to Austria, which was made vacant by the transfer of Mr. BURLINGAME, have been filled, and it is understood that the selection for that has already been made. All of the consulates to which are attached lucrative or even living salaries are also disposed of.

The Cabinet held a protracted session to-day, and though outsiders are not supposed to know what was the nature of it, we all have a right to guess, and therefore I will venture to suppose that among the other important measures under consideration were the message of the Executive, the plan of the war, and the mode of operating the questions arising out of the blockade. What transpired in the Cabinet has not, of course, been made public, but I doubt not that it will be found I have guessed as well as most of those who attempt to give accounts of things they know nothing of. This much, however, I do know.

Here our editors mock Confederates in South Carolina and Missouri.
It’s good stuff if you enjoy that kind of thing.
For those who don’t, it suggests our editors were concerned enough to put a lot of effort into words of disparagement.
