With the stroke of a pen, the future of college athletics in Illinois took a dramatic turn for the better for student athletes.
Governor JB Pritzker signed a bill Tuesday that will allow them to make money off their celebrity, beginning a new day in Illinois college athletics.
"This isn't just a win for our student athletes, it's a win for the future of our entire state," Pritzker said

A few attorneys will profit and perhaps one-tenth of one percent of the students? And even fewer female athletes.
Perhaps this will finally end the whole athletes are students farce
Recruiting for Illini Football is going to go bonkers...
Will the women athletes have to get the same amount of money as the men’s football and basketball players?
A few star players will get big money. Division 2 and 3 players: not much of anything. The 100$ hand shakes will continue. And basically, who exactually cares all that much about college cross country or college golf. We are talking about football and basketball and not much more.
” College “ football ?
Yeah, right.

Like bodybuilding competitions, they could have clean/tested or no test competitions.
Student-athletes post their classes and GPAs... the others could post their school salary.
After their attorney/rep is paid, most would not make milk money.
The statement “There’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’” just went out the door now that every athlete will see every play as a potential money making highlight reel even at the expense of a team win.

That will be fun!!!
Long overdue, maybe kill the NCAA too?
I can see the number of sports teams being reduced, because they aren’t as profitable because they have to pay athletes.
Most of the best college basketball players these days are one and done. Just one year of college and into the 1st round of the NBA draft. Not on the college campus long enough to achieve name on shirt recognition. That just leaves football. Who at Illinois is a star football player?

An astute observation.
Thank you.
Good bye college sports.

Is that good or bad?
Makes no difference, either way, my taxes will go up.
That is not a bad thing. Less money for liberal indoctrination.
Exactly !
I guess this will limit the profit made from the men’s football team - reducing the funds redistributed to women’s sports…
A lot of money has been made off the backs of athletes who got nothing while their schools got rich. I have no problem with seeing athletes being able to make money off their own likeness.
