...drawing comparisons to the Pixar flick “Up” in which a balloon salesman clings stubbornly to his house as skyscrapers spring up around it.
Orlando Capote told CBS4 News in Miami that his father bought the humble single-family home in 1989, after escaping Cuba and working double jobs to achieve his American dream.
“The house is my soul,” said Capote. “So what good is it to sell your soul for all the money in the world?”
Capote’s father died in 2005. He then lost his mother last year, who asked before she died that the son not sell the “family treasure.”
“This house is like a hard drive. As I look around and live in it and move through it, I relive a lot of memories. That I could not find in another house.”
The fearless Floridian not only refuses to dishonor his mother’s wishes, he’s fighting back against the developers and city hall.

He may regret that decision.
It’s nobody’s business but his.
I bet the developer would move the house and all the dirt for 10 feet below and around it to a new site and set it all up for free.
If the govt EDs the property. You know to build a military facility there or something.
They refer to the Movie Up as an example.
I believe it was actually a Looney Toons Cartoon where New York Skyscrapers were built around a Parcel of Land occupied by a small House that the owner wouldn’t sell.
Can’t remember if it was a Bugs Bunny Cartoon.
Love these types of stories.
“I just don’t wanna!”
Hope he ends up filthy rich.
That’s actually a pretty good idea if he’d go for it. It sounds like it will not be a peaceful, quiet environment to live in soon.
Florida is one of the states that amended their eminent domain statutes in the wake of Kelo.
This is why he remains the owner.
Let them pay him through the nose. He should milk them for all it’s worth.
Some developer wants to pay me top dineros for mine I’m all ears.
Or they decide that the government can force him to sell like in they did in Kelo v. City of New London claiming that because they can make more tax money off the property.
But in the grand scheme of things, it’s never wise to commit intransigently to temporal possessions.
You folks refuse to acknowledge one BIG fact: Your hero Donald J. Tump would evict him now wouldn’t he? Don’t lie. DJT is my hero too but he’d be wrong on this one. In this capitalist world EVERYONE has his price. Not this guy. So there you have it. What you gonna say? Don’t tell me he’s making a mistake or wrong. This is America and DJT doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
He might, but I don’t think that is possible with that type of structure.
A friend of the family was in a similar situation. The developer built all around the house. The house was eventually bought by the developer and torn down.
Another situation is happened near me. Someone bought up all land around an office building and put in a mixed shopping/housing development. One the owner of the missing parcel sells, the parking garage will be extended.
This is what happened in the movie “There Will Be Blood”.
I see that all the time .. one last house holding out fo4 then $$$$$$ Gotta love it!
He’s read The Art of the Deal and he’s just negotiating his price. That’s all.
The mother will die, the 63 yo son will die. The developers will have to wait. Move the house, fine. If they say no think of something else.
Remember the poor Old Lady who wouldn’t sell out to that evil Developer Trump in Atlantic City?
The Media milked that for all it was worth.
