Why the Miami Beach Area Condo Search Seems to Go Slowly
New York Times ^ | - 31m ago June 27, 2021 | Melina Delkic

Rescuers continued their search for victims of the Champlain Towers South condo in Surfside, Fla., on Sunday. As a perilous search and rescue operation heads into its fourth day in Surfside, Fla., some have asked why the operation at the collapsed Champlain Towers South condo building has taken so long and whether there is any hope for those left inside.

Officials have assured the public that the local search team, well regarded and sent to disasters around the world, and now working together with Israeli and Mexican teams, was doing everything it could.

The dangers to the rescuers and missing residents are clear and dictate that the process must be slow and deliberate, experts and officials say.

Toxic chemicals to fire

“Inside of there, there is everything from toxic chemicals to fire, smoke, all kinds of other hazards,” Sen. Marco Rubio, who visited the site on Saturday, said on the CBS program “Face the Nation.” “They have to be very careful. If they move one piece of rebar here, the rest of the pile could collapse somewhere else and either hurt the responders or hurt any survivors that might still be down there.”

The search is moving along, after a fire that impeded visibility was brought under control.

Would the complainers be happier if the rescuers just started using backhoes? Or are the complaints primarily an organized attempt to find a way to blame Governor DeSantis.

I think the human body can go four days without water. Longer without food but water is the biggest early hurdle for an otherwise uninjured human. ...Based upon my limited knowdge.

I'd say you are right about the water. It takes bout 18-24 days to starve to death if you get some water, but lasting a week without liquids is difficult. -Tom

The search would certainly go faster if a dozen front end loaders were used. The results might be a bit messier, though. Dynamite could also be used to pulverize the rubble to make it easier to sift.

We live in a Society where TV Shows depict Murders being solved in one Hour, minus Commercials of course.

If you have the Show recorded on DVR you can speed through those same Commercials and get your satisfying results in less than Forty Minutes.

Heck, People get upset when their WiFi is a little slow.

A rule of thumb I’ve heard is seven. Seven minutes without air, seven days without water, seven weeks without food. But you’re going to be uncomfortable with three of each.

And there is always the danger of the rest of it collapsing.

It is an impossible job....Finding someone who was on the lower floors is impossible...you have twelve floors on top of the first floor...it is done so they can say they tried...just Lady Luck at this point...moving concrete with rebar is hard to do...every thing is all twisted...rebar has to cut ...

” It takes bout 18-24 days to starve to death if you get some water,”

An average human, if healthy can go 30-40 days without food.
I would bet most Americans have the fat reserves to go longer than that. Being stuck in a collapsed building like that might be one of the only times having a little extra weight would be a good thing!

People can go longer without food depending on fat reserves. Water / hydration will kill them much faster.

Three MINUTES without air.
Three DAYS without water.
Three WEEKS without food.

Take your pick! ;)

My prayer is that those who are still missing ARE dead. Being trapped under rubble would be a living nightmare for me.

Also - praying for a miracle!

Correct.

One can go weeks without food.

But only 3 days without water. By tomorrow if any are still alive under the rubble, they will begin to die, it’s awful.

And there is always the danger of the rest of it collapsing.

These are experienced rescuers and seem to know the best course of action for the situation.

This is an excerpt from the article. -Tom
"Experts are using dogs, sonar, cameras and have created trenches to navigate below the pile, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava of Miami-Dade County said on “Face the Nation” on Sunday. One trench is 125 feet long, 20 feet wide and 40 feet deep".

They just have to try to find any excuse to blame DeSantis for something.

I should have clarified my remark as it applies to old sick people, some in a coma, who are starved to death. (the plug is pulled)-Tom

I told my wife hours after the collapse: “Not one person will be found alive in there.” That woman screaming at DeSantis was way out of line and dishonoring her daughter’s memory.
