Today I was walking into the public high school in my town and noticed that that Flag was at full mast. It seems these days that it is at half mast so much that I only notice when it is up high.
Then it occurred to me that we had a major catastrophe happen a few days ago that killed about 100 people in Miami? Seems like a tragedy worth honoring, if there ever was one.
Must we bring Joe's incontinence into every convo?
If the Communist Revolution succeeds here are the Chinese going to pick out our new flag?
Every calamity is not a “national” calamity and should not be noted as one every time and in every locale. Doing so fraudulently lifts the common calamity to heights that should be reserved for truly “national” calamities.
That is not to say that any locale where a major calamity occurs should not, in that locale, fly local flags at half mast if they want to, nor that public officials from other locales should not publicly offer condolences and support to the locale where the calamity occurred, nor that individual public citizens and enterprises, anywhere, should not, if they want to, demonstrate their own sympathy with those who were affected.
But all U.S. flags flying at half staff everywhere should only be for truly “national” calamities.

The threshold for flying the flag at half mast is becoming more and more subjective these days. What you would consider a ‘tragedy’ might be someone else’s ‘good riddance’. What happened in North Beach was tragic, but if aanything, they should fly the Florida state flag at half mast, not the U.S. flag. Not to sound cold about it, but it didn’t affect anyone in Idaho or Kansas.

It is our national psyche at this point to honor “victims”, I guess because we no longer have heroes.

I don’t feel it is a valid reason, personally.
My issue is that it is constantly at half mast. I feel that it encourages and fosters a victim mentality.
We didn’t lower the flag when we lost a thousand men in a day or two. We shouldn’t lower the colors for this.
It WOULD have been had a Republican been mayor of Miami-Dade.
