Every piston-powered brag must now come with an asterisk; every Cars and Coffee, a sacrament of denial.
While much has been made of the Plaid’s straight-line acceleration—0-60 mph in 1.99 seconds and ¼-mile time of 9.2 seconds, both records for a series-production automobile—not enough has been said about its lateral acceleration, its race car-like roadholding and mechanical grip. Forget planking. Route 299 is the core workout you’ve been looking for.
At a 250 kW Supercharger, the Plaid can recharge at a rate equivalent to 1,000 miles of range per hour—or 187 miles gained in 15 minutes.
One last, unfathomable number: 1,020 hp, by way of three AC permanent-magnet motors, one in the front and two in the back.
These watermelon-sized machines are wrapped in carbon-fiber sleeves under two giga-Pascals’ pressure. The overwrap allows the motors to spin up to 18,000 rpm and withstand centrifugal forces up to 250,000 pounds without flying apart, thus eliminating the need for a ratio-changing gearset to reach high speed.
And we haven’t even heard from James Clerk Maxwell yet. The ferrous alloys in conventional motor cages “steals flux,” said one Tesla engineer—which is to say, reduces torque. “But carbon [fiber] is like air to flux.” Unlike other motors, these machines produce peak power all the way to peak rpm.
On a deserted road in Nevada, I romped it from a slow roll to 160 mph in less than 18 seconds and I wasn’t even at 100%. Good brakes, too.

My 1995 normally-aspirated E300D, with no emission controls went from 0-60 in 26 seconds. lol. Sold it at 335,000 miles.
—”Sold it at 335,000 miles.”
NICE RUN!
And then ya gotta charge it up for what......7 hours?? Lol
Best power plant China can make.
No thanks. I don't need to be the king of the road. I just need to get places where there's no electricity, and get there and back reliably on a single tank of gas. Which I can do now. Already. With vehicles that are already paid for.
If I ever moved down into the valley and became one of those suburban mall people who only bop around in town, I could see the point of an EV. But if I did become one of those people, then I would ask someone to just shoot me.
Also, I hate people.
“The Tesla Model S Plaid needed 51 minutes to charge from 5 to 95 percent”
Hmmm...I can fill up my jeep in less than 10 and down the road I go.
The dirty little secret about EVs is how the manufacture and disposal of the batteries is a nasty process.....and that the battery has a limited life span and will eventually need to be replaced. And I’m guessing that’s not an inexpensive proposition.
Man, that’s Serius!
“ And then ya gotta charge it up for what......7 hours?? Lol”
Read the article. It’s getting better. 187 miles of charge/hour. Still slow, but encouraging.
“Hmmm...I can fill up my jeep in less than 10 and down the road I go.”
...and if I need a thrill for 2 seconds I’ll get on a carnival ride. Now if I need something to hold my nose up at others, strongly implying that I am BETTER than they are, because I care about the environment and they don’t, then a Tesla may just make sense. But I don’t have that need.
No, it’s getting 187-miles per 15-minutes of charge, using the Tesla Supercharge.

“Flex Alert” means we have run out of electricity.
Better than that. 1000 miles of range per hour of charging. 187 miles of charge in 15 minutes.
Chargers which allow that are rare, at least at the moment.
Oh, why not? Get in touch with your inner snob. :D
Price, as tested: $147,990 (including full self-driving package) ............................... Hmmmmmm, I wonder if it will be lower if I buy 2? But then again 147,990 was only 14,799 in 1960. Wait! That was the price of a 3 Br 2 Ba house with a basement back then. I think I’ll invest in a nice condo instead of the car. 10 yrs from now the car won’t cost as much and the condo will increase. I think being frugal is the better idea. Is the EV a needful thing? My 15mpg T&C will have to do for now. 3500 miles per year it works fine with me driving in the left lane at 45mph on I 75 in FLA.. 0-60 in 2 sec.? What’s the hurry? LOL!
Hard acceleration will drain the battery and reduce the amount of miles you can drive.
You could plug into a supercharger and pray ERCOT does not throttle the flow of power to recharge the battery
Looks like 187 miles in a 15 minute charge.
