Starchy snacks may increase CVD risk; fruits and veggies at certain meals decreases risk
Science Daily / American Heart Association ^ | March 23, 2021 | Wei Wei, Wenbo Jiang, Jiaxin Huang, Jiaxu Xu, et al.

Can starchy snacks harm heart health? New research published today found eating starchy snacks high in white potato or other starches after any meal was associated at least a 50% increased risk of mortality and a 44-57% increased risk of CVD-related death. Conversely, eating fruits, vegetables or dairy at specific meals is associated with a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer or any cause.

According to their findings:

Eating a Western lunch (typically containing refined grains, cheese, cured meat) was associated with a 44% increased risk of CVD death;

Eating a fruit-based lunch was associated with a 34% reduced risk of CVD death;

Eating a vegetable-based dinner was associated with a 23% and 31% reduction in CVD and all-cause mortality, respectively;

and

Consuming a snack high in starch after any meal was associated with a 50-52% increased risk of all-cause mortality and a 44-57% increased risk in CVD-related mortality.

"Our results revealed that the amount and the intake time of various types of foods are equally critical for maintaining optimal health," said Li. "Future nutrition guidelines and interventional strategies could integrate optimal consumption times for foods across the day."

In this case, it appears simply eating a high starch food, either during the meal or immediately after a healthy meal, caused between a 44% to 57% increase in cardiovascular death.

Big duh. I eat fruit or veggies twice a day with eggs, meat or fish. and don ‘t eat wheat. Plenty of potatoes. Last week at doc my bp was 118/70. I’m old, been doing this all my life.

Back in the ‘60’s my mother ticked off on her fingers how the government’s advice on diet had changed over the years. She remembered the actual dates, but it went something like this, preceded by date...eggs bad...eggs good...eggs bad...bacon bad...bacon good...bacon bad...butter bad...butter good...saturated fats good...saturated fats bad...

Her advice? Everything in moderation. She lived to be 102 and would probably still be with us if not for a fall. Sharp as a tac to the last day.

“Sounds like she was quite a lady.”

I keep thinking of things she said that I have lived by my entire life. One of them was, “You pay attention to what people say. They will tell you how they are going to treat you. Your task is to believe them and take whatever action is appropriate.” Several times I’ve read in news articles about how the murderer told someone he was going to kill them and, at some point, he did. Wherever someone “goes off” on someone else her advice was, Pay attention to how people treat others, because one day that’s how they’ll treat you.” Oh, she also said, “Sixteen will get you twenty. Good dating advice.

My issue with these surveys is the quality of the food is generally not cited. Meaning, I may eat meat, and sometimes its processed... but grass fed and no nitrates. I also eat plenty of vegetables, no processed food, sugar nor grains. I could make a very easy logical leap and state that people who eat starchy chips, generally are not super healthy or health conscious.

almost 2 months ago my bp was 200-205/105-110. No meds. I have not seen a doctor in many years. I do have an appt in August.

I was junk and fast food junkie. I could barely walk from my car to any store without my legs screamin in pain. I was so lethargic I could barely stay awake during the day. Looking back I truly was probably days away from dying.

I stopped eating meat entirely, no pop or junkfood. No salt whatsoever. No salad dressing etc.

I have since lost 31 lbs eating just veggies and fruit and nuts and drinking a gallon of water every day.

I started walking every day on the nature trails near my house little by little. Yesterday I completed the 2.2 mile loop in an hour and ten minutes stopping about 10 times but I made it.

My bp this morning was 138/83 no meds. That drop is in 2 months!!!!!

I have another 40 lbs to lose and I think my bp will go even lower.

I am 59 years old.

Starchy foods are typically high in carbs/sugar.

The unholy alliance between the food and pharma industries...

That’s awesome.

Avoid the carbs and substitute with healthy fats — which you may be doing now.

We can easily survive with zero net carbs. But when you need a quick mental energy boost, a dose of the “evil” carbs can help given it’s a super fast fuel.

And if you’re T2 (pre) diabetic, minimal net carbs is very helpful.
