I know what you describe was true in the past about armaments. But those ships were designed to be all thin g s to all situations. When Sergei Gorshkov became Admiral of the Soviet Fleet he stopped construction and demanded new designs. His famous words were “ Better is the enemy of good enough.” Now if the Russians have returned to their profligate ways it’s news to me. And not the smartest move.

This may not be the biggest strike force they could mount, but it seems to be a surprise that they could do this at all (plus subs, likely) No fleet tug for breakdowns, all the merriment that they can't really go very far. They are just showing capability. They have no plans to attack, but it is a surprise that they could get these ships within 35 miles of Honolulu and seemingly in functional shape.

It was my understanding that these were joint maneuvers in the Pacific between Russian naval units and Chinese naval units... no mention of Chinese ships here.

Joint maneuvers would obviously be a powerplay thumb in the eye to Washington and a statement of unity by the Asia neighbors.

We used to load the gallon containers and the cases on a small platform the Russian would lower from their Copters when they inspected our remote base - a good will gesture on our part (all 20 of us) since they were only 4k away with 4 Russian standard mechanized Armies with 35,000 tanks.

We didn’t have any strawberries as they were always ‘intercepted’ before they could reach us.
