The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched a multistate public health investigation after at least 12 people were exposed to a dog, imported from Azerbaijan by a rescue group, that tested positive for a rabies variant.

The dog was among a group of 33 canines and one cat that arrived at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on June 10. None of the other animals have tested positive, but all are considered to have been exposed...

...According to testing by the CDC, the dog was infected with rabies before it arrived in the United States. Other animals in the shipment were transported to California, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

...The news comes a month before a year-long CDC ban on imported dogs from roughly 100 countries considered at high risk for rabies is scheduled to take effect...

Is people are so fanatical about rescuing dogs that they have to rescue them from overseas now?

What is the incredible cost behind flying a mutt meant for euthanasia to the US from Azerbaijan?

Can we make the dogs infect the stupid people involved?

We are quickly becoming the most stupid nation on earth. According to the ASPCA they euthanize 670,000 dogs a year. We don’t have enough rescue dogs? We have to import them from former Soviet block countries?

Seems to me we have many animals right here needing to be rescued. Why the ‘H’ import them?

So they’ll investigate a dog with rabies.

But won’t investigate the deadliest virus to sweep the planet. Deadlier than Ebola, HIV, Hep C, and anything else anyone can name.

I do, and my dog is a rescue, albeit from the U.S.

That’s what I was thinking. There are more than enough stray cats and dogs already here, so why are we importing them now?

Agreed. Are they going to stage a rabies outbreak? Require slaughter of animals? Something doesn’t sound right.

Untrue to say rabies eliminated in the US. Rabies is still found in bats and racoons as well as other wild animals.

All of my house pets have been Pound Found, fixed, and never an accidental pregnancy among any of them. While I prefer dogs, people are always GIVING me cats, so same thing.

We raise Treeing Walker Coon Hounds and Plott Hounds and right now I have an English Coon Hound puppy to raise, but since all of our dogs are purebreds, the only ones that get ‘fixed’ are the unruly males that are good enough to hunt, but not good enough to breed.

Believe me, the girls and boys are NEVER alone together, unless there’s a specific reason for it. ;)

My steer that I’m raising is a cross between a Holstein Dairy cow and a Black Angus Bull - somebody jumped the fence, but it’ll all turn out for my benefit eventually, when ‘Weber’ gets back from ‘the spa’ in early spring. ;)
