Joshua Garza had a chance to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in January but he passed it up, thinking he didn't really need it.
Now, the 43-year-old Texan is hoping to inspire others to get the shot after he became so ill following his COVID-19 diagnosis that he needed a rare double lung transplant to survive.
"COVID ended up attacking my lungs," Garza, of Sugarland, told ABC News.
After testing positive for COVID-19 in late January, Garza's health deteriorated rapidly. On Feb. 2, when he ended up falling while trying to walk, his wife called for an ambulance to take him to the hospital. He was ultimately transferred to Houston Methodist, where he was put on an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine to pump and oxygenate his blood for him.
"It was quick, it was within three weeks, the lungs were already shot," said Garza, who works in the oil and gas industry.
Garza was put on the lung transplant list, and on April 13, successfully underwent surgery. He spent several more weeks recovering and rehabilitating to regain his strength after two months on life support before being released from the hospital on May 27...
"It's much easier to get the vaccine than to go through something like this," Huang said of Garza's case. "He's extremely lucky. Most people in this situation don't make it to the transplant. You can't count on this outcome."
For Garza, he's sharing his story in hopes of helping prevent others from experiencing what we went through.
"If I knew what I know now," he said, "I would have definitely went through with the vaccination."

And it tuned out that having asthma wasn’t that big a deal once all the data started coming in.
o Hydrochloroquine (HCQ), or
o Quercetin, or
o Ivermectin; and
o Zinc as Zinc oxide and/or zinc gluconate; and
o Vitamin D3; and
o massive Vitamin C; plus
o Famotidine (generic Pepcid) if any of the warning symptoms (sneezing, coughing, nausea, difficulty breathing) start to show up

Would anyone have told him to ingest any of these on a daily basis?
Scare story. I had it. Very mild case. No complications. Just like the vast majority of people.

No mention of ivermectin - just a ventilator and a lung transplant.
You’re aware the vaccine wasn’t eligible to people under 50 at the end of January… right?
Too bad he couldn’t have been treated with Ivermectin or Hydroxychloroquine.

It really amounts to the “right” person dying and donating their lungs.
Perhaps someone shot in the head in Chicago.
Usually it’s from a traumatic death and not from decease.
You’re aware the vaccine was eligible to people under 50 (with co-morbidities) at the end of January… right?
He is 43 and says he had the opportunity to get the vaccine in January. Was that early for a healthy 43 year-old? I think so.
They were still registering those 65 and older, for these experimental shots, in mid-February, 2020, in this guy’s county. His group had not opened up, yet.
I call BS on his claim that he passed up the shot, in January.

If he was treated in Texas, it most likely meant no early treatment. Go home and when you get sicker, come back and see us. No fooling. This is the policy of most large corporate practices.

Rare. So... anecdotal evidence.
Health care workers were allowed to get vaccinated at an early date regardless of age. And in some cases, healthcare worker was loosely defined. I personally know a 40 something male who was vaccinated in January and he worked for a health care related field. He did not see patients, but more med tech company.
This circumstance is just as “rare” as severe complications/reactions from the vaccine...amiright?
Looks like he was low on Vitamin D, in addition to any of the other standard co-morbidities.
Of all the people who didn’t get the jab, how many needed a double lung transplant? Asking for a statistician friend.
