New research identifies link between gut microbes and stroke

New findings from Cleveland Clinic researchers show for the first time that the gut microbiome impacts stroke severity and functional impairment following stroke. The results, published in Cell Host & Microbe, lay the groundwork for potential new interventions to help treat or prevent stroke.

The research was led by Weifei Zhu, Ph.D., and Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., of Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute. The study builds on more than a decade of research spearheaded by Dr. Hazen and his team related to the gut microbiome's role in cardiovascular health and disease, including the adverse effects of TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide)—a byproduct produced when gut bacteria digest certain nutrients abundant in red meat and other animal products.

"In this study we found that dietary choline and TMAO produced greater stroke size and severity, and poorer outcomes in animal models," said Dr. Hazen, chair of the Department of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Sciences and director of Cleveland Clinic's Center for Microbiome & Human Health. "Remarkably, simply transplanting gut microbes capable of making TMAO was enough to cause a profound change in stroke severity."

Previously, Dr. Hazen and his team discovered that elevated TMAO levels can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. In clinical studies involving thousands of patients, they have shown that blood levels of TMAO predict future risk of heart attack, stroke and death -findings that have been replicated around the world. Earlier studies, also led by Drs. Zhu and Hazen, were the first to show a link between TMAO and enhanced risk for blood clotting.

The team found that a gut microbe enzyme critical to TMAO production called CutC drove heightened stroke severity and worsened outcomes.

I actually practice IF. I feel so much better on days don’t eat. Maybe that’s part of the reason.

Thanks very much. I don’t know what my CAC score was when I started, but I’ve been taking “Koncentrated K” and D3 for over a year now.

K with MK7 is supposed to take the calcium out of the arteries and put it back where it belongs, including teeth.

About four months into this diet, I started noticing “something was up” so I asked my doc to run my T. The reading was 521. Average for a guy in his late 30’s.

I believe the diet heals the lining of the arteries, which is where nitric oxide is produced (secret of viagra).

Three years ago I also had bleeding gums when I brushed or flossed or used a toothpick. No more blood. I didn’t notice that until I saw Jordan Peterson say the same thing.

I had a descending tooth that my dentist said I would lose, due to bone loss from the gum disease. It has stablilized. I just ground it off level with the other front teeth.

This was me shooting pool on Christmas Eve of 2009 when I was about 245:

The diet is easy once you get past the first few weeks. I was keto for a while, limiting myself to 20g of carbs or less. Then I started hearing about the zero carb carnivore diet and embraced it.

Yes, I have started eating yogurt. Ralph’s has Chobani low fat plain Greek yogurt that’s high protein zero fat, low carb. Costco has similar.

To lose body fat, you want high protein vs low fat AND low carb. Watch a few videos by Ted Naiman talking about his PE diet. PE is the protein to energy ratio, where P is protein and E is energy in carbs plus fats, everything measured in grams. To lose fat you want at least 2:1. Beef is about 1:1, so are eggs, good for maintenance, or weight loss if you have a lot to lose.

Paving the way for Bill Gate’s FAKE MEAT.

Agree. Expect a lot more meatphobic "scientific" articles to come our way. Drip, drip, drip.

You can get plain, unflavored yogurt, Nancy’s or other brands. Kefir is good too. I actually love Goat Kefir. Go figure.

all the kefirs I’ve seen are loaded with sugar.

Its hard enough finding yogurt with only one or two grams of sugar.
