Solar Assets Are ‘Chronically Underperforming’ and Modules Degrading Faster Than Expected, Research Finds
PV-Tech ^ | June 16, 2021 | Liam Stoker

Posted on 06/16/2021 12:30:10 PM PDT by PGR88

kWh Analytics’ most recent figures place the median annual degradation for residential solar systems as 1.09% and non-residential systems at 0.8%. The report states that over a 20-year asset life, project degradation could therefore be underestimated by as much as 14%, resulting in severely overestimated performance and revenue forecasts produced within a P50 model.

I'm not against solar at all, but with all the green-hype and political propaganda flooding the media, its always good to get realistic commentary.

Anybody that has ever bought any of those solar powered sidewalk accent lights knows they only last about 2 or 3 seasons if you are lucky.......................

I am against ALL forms of direct subsidies for solar.

It has to be left to rely on the science of true energy-economics - rate of return of energy per dollar of investment - so that it can be chosen for natural economic reasons and NOT because the government sweetens the deal with direct subsidies to anyone in the solar-energy chain, from manufacturing through all distribution points all the way to the end user.

One of the direct subsidies is provided via state regulations that REQUIRE large energy producers who are on “the grid” to buy any “excess” solar energy produced by any “roof top” system and to pay retail for it, whether they need it or not; when if they needed more electricity for their consumers on the grid they could buy it cheaper wholesale. Without that forced buy-back many end-users of “roof top” solar systems would balk at their true unsubsidized costs and would not be supporting the solar industry.

“Research Finds”

Notwithstanding the merits of the article’s conclusions, I really dislike that phrase. It’s a cheap way to confer legitimacy. Who is this Professor Research, anyway? What’s his record of success?

You want reliable, unending solar power 24/7/365?

The answer is simple. Just place solar power collection panels in geosynchronous earth orbit, so they remain above the same point on the earth’s surface at all times. Then using the principles developed by Nicholas Tesla for transmitting the power wirelessly on a tight microwave beam down to the earth’s surface, to a receiving station on the ground, and distribute the electricity from that point.

Of course, this would take a level and degree of engineering expertise far beyond what is now being applied even for the control and containment of fusion energy, as there are SO many ways for this laser beam to be diverted to produce great mischief, and the least break would be catastrophic.

And besides, the optimal geosynchronous points are rapidly being taken up for other purposes.

That’s because water leaks into the plastic-encased cells and also the cheap batteries die.

LG Neon2 365 W panels are GUARANTEED to degrade no more than .3% per year, for 25 years. Made in Huntsville, AL.

And yeah the cheap Chinese PV panels are just that.

From the Manufacturers of Candles, Tapers, Lanterns, sticks, Street Lamps, Snuffers, and Extinguishers, and from Producers of Tallow, Oil, Resin, Alcohol, and Generally of Everything Connected with Lighting.
To the Honourable Members of the Chamber of Deputies.
Open letter to the French Parliament, originally published in 1845 (Note of the Web Publisher)

Gentlemen:
You are on the right track. You reject abstract theories and have little regard for abundance and low prices. You concern yourselves mainly with the fate of the producer. You wish to free him from foreign competition, that is, to reserve the domestic market for domestic industry.

We come to offer you a wonderful opportunity for your — what shall we call it? Your theory? No, nothing is more deceptive than theory. Your doctrine? Your system? Your principle? But you dislike doctrines, you have a horror of systems, as for principles, you deny that there are any in political economy; therefore we shall call it your practice — your practice without theory and without principle.

We are suffering from the ruinous competition of a rival who apparently works under conditions so far superior to our own for the production of light that he is flooding the domestic market with it at an incredibly low price; for the moment he appears, our sales cease, all the consumers turn to him, and a branch of French industry whose ramifications are innumerable is all at once reduced to complete stagnation. This rival, which is none other than the sun, is waging war on us so mercilessly we suspect he is being stirred up against us by perfidious Albion (excellent diplomacy nowadays!), particularly because he has for that haughty island a respect that he does not show for us.

Sure and all living matter that passes thru that beam from space are fried to a crisp, and how does it do on cloudy days? Does it burn off all the atmospheric water vapor making rain nonexistent? etc
