One of the things I learned is that you should never push and increase exercise increments too rapidly. Your brain doesn’t like to be in pain, the idea is to actually look forward to regular and steady exercise. Also, the goal is to be exercising regularly, not laid up for a few weeks while an older body slowly heals after injury. It’s better to skip a day than push through some pain and then not be able to do your routine at all for weeks or months. Patience is rewarded with exercise.

Also, don’t eat anywhere close to bed time.

And I love Yahoo stories that really are product advertisements. I wonder how much Noom paid for this crap.

For the record, my record of not ever finding anything worthwhile at any Yahoo site is intact.

Example of good eating:

Breakfast - two eggs, 4oz ham, two pieces of dry sprouted grain toast. 50grams protein. 1 cup coffee with an oz H&H.

Meal 1 - salad - 3oz feta, 12 cherry tomatoes, 2oz mixed sprouts, 2TBLS EVOO. 15grams protein.

Meal 2 - Whey protein shake. 60 grams protein.

Meal 3 - Half grilled chicken breast (6oz cooked), 1 oz mixed nuts, 1/2 cup cottage cheese and 3oz blueberries. 50grams protein.

1800 calories of nutrition. 175 grams of protein.

Believe me it gets MUCH easier as you go.

I can barely look at bread anymore without getting queasy.

The main thing you will notice is that your appetite goes way down. You will no longer crave it. And when you accidentally eat some you will regret it.

Your stomach will deflate and your joints will stop hurting.

The wheat flour causes inflamation.

I slipped up a couple of weeks ago when I started a new contract and all they had was sandwiches... by the end of the week I could barely walk.

Once you get used to it a steak salad will look much more appetizing to you than anything with bread. My salads are like a meal- spinach and arugula, hard boiled eggs, beats, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, dried cranberries, cheese and more cheese (mmm Feta cheese) grated carrots, pumpkin seeds, sunflower kernels.... balsamic vinaigrette

Dam... now I’m hungry.

Side benefit - I am no longer hungry constantly - almost never. an egg or two and a salad every day is all I need.

very good input.

we men tend to start out where we left off at 20yrs old.

It doesn’t work if you’ve been on the couch for 40 years!

A little DOMS is expected, but pay particular attention to your joints and tendons. If those are sore, take another day off.

And work at a consistent pace through time, with gradual increases.

Absolutely. We also think we can heal like we did at 20. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is better to go ridiculously slow to the point of head hanging shame instead of risking an injury that will stop my routine cold for however long my body decides to heal up. But losing weight does absolutely wonders for durability, so when actual weight loss comes you don’t tend to get hurt as much, or at least I haven’t.

We are living in a sci-fi dystopia where the poorest are the most likely to be fat and the richest are the most likely to be thin. These trends have reversed all of human experience. I often think we don’t think about how remarkable our current societal conditions are.

<< The wheat flour causes inflammation >>

What in it causes the inflammation? The gluten proteins? If so, then anything containing gluten is a culprit, and that would mean avoiding more than just wheat — barley, rye, malt in various forms, brewer’s yeast...

How long did it take for your joint pain to subside? Longest I went was a week.

Just getting on my 10-speed and riding a few miles a week has helped a lot. Luckily, I live in a hilly area with a lot of inclines.

When you’re ready to kick your exercise routine up a notch, try starting your bike ride on the south side of Chicago, and seeing if you can reach the other side of the neighborhood alive. Sometimes we just need a little motivation.

Don’t be afraid of taking that extra day off if needed.

And know how to spot the need.

And no, the average 50yr old man is not going to go from the couch to benching even 75lbs for 3 sets of 12.

Much less over 65 yrs.

A competent trainer would cap him at 3x12x50lbs and make him come back the following day if he wants more.

He won’t be back for more the next day, at least not more bench presses.

But with practice and good nutrition I found I can sustain 3x12x100lbs without joint issues...and I have bad shoulder.

Half the men on this forum would be out of breath just carrying their rifle to the truck. But they talk badass revolutionary all the time lol

Walking just 2 miles per day, 6 days per week is all the cardio anyone needs to be healthy.

If you want to be strong, lift weights too.

I lost 15 lbs. in 2 months just eliminating carbs (potatoes, rice, pasta, squash). Lots of protien including the fat and lots of vegetables. Somewhat limiting at first but you have a lot more energy. I’m 74 and it works.

I use water excersizes to build muscle supporting my joints. Joints and whole body feel better after the pool. Arnica gel gives me some topical relief also.
