HIGHLAND PARK, MI -- Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and LGBTQ rights advocates said a new executive order blocking government funding for conversion therapy on minors is a first step toward outlawing the practices in Michigan.
The governor said tax dollars should not go toward “dangerous and discredited” practices during a Monday press conference at the Ruth Ellis Center, a social service agency for LGBTQ youth. Whitmer also endorsed two bills seeking to prohibit mental health professionals from engaging minors in conversion therapy, described as any treatment that seeks to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
“Conversion therapy is opposed by medical experts, is rooted in bigotry and it can have long-term harmful effects,” Whitmer said.
The new executive order, effective immediately, prohibits the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services from using state or federal funds for conversion therapy on minors. This includes funding related to Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, child welfare services and juvenile justice programs.
The order also requires all state departments and agencies to explore further actions to ”protect minors from the practice of conversion therapy as permitted by law.” Monday’s event took place halfway through Pride Month, which was formally recognized by the Michigan Legislature for the first time this year.
“Pride is about action, and today we are taking action to bend the arc of history toward justice and equity for all,” Whitmer said.

Equality Michigan Executive Director Erin Knott said “extreme practices” using electro-shock therapy, surgery and chemical drugs are becoming less common, but all forms of conversion therapy are harmful.

Confirming a wise decision I made 11 years ago to flee Michigan when I retired.
(In fairness, there’s a lot of Michigan that isn’t insane, but unfortunately they get out-voted (or out-cheated) by the Detroit/AnnArbor/Lansing/GrandRapids axis.)

Sorry but the evidence is clear; this so called therapy does not work and it eventually causes long term psychological harm to the child. It may make Mom or Dad feel better thinking they saved their child but the effects are temporary and the overwhelming percentage eventually resume the lifestyle...after mom and dad's bank account is significantly lighter.
Well, this bill came from our bush league chamber of commerce worshiping republiCAN’T controlled legislature, so there has to be a catch.
What else is included in this bill?
They want as many people as possible in the certified victim group. Trying to leave the specially privileged group now will be a little harder.
BS! Homosexuality is a psychological and moral problem. Those who suffer from it need psychological treatment and moral guidance. Is such treatment 100% effective? No, but tell me which psychological treatments are.
How about banning “conversion” in the FIRST place.
THAT is where the mental unbalance occurs.
Whitmer is a real Whackoo.
In my experience, there was always a huge disconnect between the run of the mill gay person and those quasi fascistic activists. Those people not only want you to approve of their lifestyle, they want you to celebrate it. The average gay (again from my experience as I do have gay relatives and have worked with plenty of gays over the years) just wants to be left alone.
And what would you say to those who have testified that they have been cured? As for those who cannot be cured, there is alway moral control. This is true for both homosexuals and heterosexuals. By God’s grace no one need be a slave to his lust.
Have any public funds anywhere ever been used for conversion therapy?
Most of those people who claim to be “cured” usually return to the lifestyle after a period of time. This conversion business is just a big scam
Believe what you want and let other do so also.
I suggest we outlaw the democrat party instead.
