Air conditioning unnecessary in majority of global heatwave conditions
MedicalXPress / University of Sydney / The Lancet “Planetary Health” ^ | June 14, 2021 | Nathan B Morris et al

The biophysical modeling study, published in The Lancet Planetary Health, challenges outdated public health guidance that discourages fan use in temperatures higher than 35 degrees Celsius / 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Based on human studies carried out at the University of Sydney's Thermal Ergonomics Laboratory, the researchers developed a model to determine the humidity-dependent temperature thresholds at which fans could become detrimental, providing conditions that exacerbate heat stress.

"The effectiveness of a fan depends on temperature and relative humidity and our previous human studies have shown that it is only when the air temperature is very high and humidity is extremely low that fans can be detrimental," said senior author Professor Ollie Jay…

Specifically, they propose that the simplified fan use temperature threshold of 35°C currently recommended by the WHO should be increased to 39°C for young healthy adults, 38°C for healthy adults older than 65 years, and 37°C for older adults taking anticholinergic medication.

Sounds brutal.

When I lived in FL, I seriously appreciated everything’s being air conditioned. Now in a temperate climate, I rarely turn mine on unless temp reaches 90. It rarely does.
Footnote: My cat hates the heat, never goes out in the sun. She’s a shorthaired Tabby.

Anyway, no-one is entitled to tell people to get heat stroke.

How many old folks dead in the last European heat wave? The French were on vacation while their elders sweltered and died without air conditioning.

Someone should remind these morons that we don’t need whiny tyrannical b—ches either but we seem to have a plethora of them these days. I recommend that all AC be removed from every WHO and UN building today. Then we will see if it’s needed or not.

Really good trick from the old, old days: go buy a huge block of ice, set it over a tub, and close off the room. The ice not only cools the room, it sucks the humidity out of the air. Old tech heaven.

That is a great idea! The ambient humidity is condensing—but on the melting ice.

I have never heard of this before.

It’s a wonderful 96 degrees in Houston right now, but the humidity is only 40%, so it isn’t too bad at the moment.
But the air is still on at the office, people would mutiny if it wasn’t.
Cant wait until next month when the humidity doubles.
So yeah, we will be keeping the A/C.

I live away from the coast in Florida, so the Gulf breezes aren’t direct, but apparently there’s enough movement in the air current from them to prevent the stifling heat I felt when traveling through Georgia’s interior one time.

Do these people not understand what happens to the non-human elements without a/c or even fans? Rust, mildew, mold in cabinets, etc.? Any refrigeration units have to work harder and will break down faster, as well as computer and other equipment that require cooler temperatures.

They had their slaves wavy palm leaves over them. The WHO should bring back that non-electric practice.

I lived my first 20 years in Texas without air conditioning. That was enough.

At least we had high ceilings and windows, big oak trees and ceiling fans but I don’t want to go back to that.

We were at 100° in Houston yesterday (record high for the date), at 97° now. With high humidity and dew points. This place would be unbearable without A/C.

In 1995, Chicago had a heat wave from July 12-16, peaking at 106 degrees. 739 heat-related deaths, most of them people without a/c.

Sure thing. That’s why tens of thousands die in France in areas with no air conditioning

The French didn’t even give grandma a fan. What sort of a country does that?

Every summer there are fan drives for the poor. Every single summer except this summer - why? Must be a Made in China covid shortage.

It is 96 degrees outside but feels cooler inside with the fans going. Normally, we turn on the a/c at 90 but the humidity is surprisingly low at 45%. It’s supposed to be triple digits this week so the WHO can take my a/c out of my cold dead hands.

Well, here in NevaDUH, gov sissypants still has emergency powers in place so i suppose he could command NVenergy to curtail abuse of electricity. Oh, and you anti vaxxer terrorists get your masks on or you’ll “pay the price”! 😲😱

The h311 A/C isn’t need. They should live in the heat/humidity without A/C. Morons.

But they won’t and they’ll come up with all kinds of excuses as to why they should be exempt (again) from what they try to impose on others.

“Drove through the bottom of Ga. once. 100F, 100%. You had to be in air conditioning, or in water. Oh, and everything smelled like a garbage truck or a urinal.”
I drove through southern Mississippi and Louisiana one summer, same thing.
