Researchers create an 'un-hackable' quantum network over hundreds of kilometers using optical fiber

oshiba's research team has broken a new record for optical fiber-based quantum communications, thanks to a new technology called dual band stabilization.

Researchers from Toshiba have successfully sent quantum information over 600-kilometer-long optical fibers, creating a new distance record and paving the way for large-scale quantum networks that could be used to exchange information securely between cities and even countries.

Working from the company's R&D lab in Cambridge in the UK, the scientists demonstrated that they could transmit quantum bits (or qubits) over hundreds of kilometers of optical fiber without scrambling ....

not sure what to call it - qubit optics?

Anything people can create, other people can destroy. Technological advances, especially military and government ones are fleeting.

I follow this stuff. The quantum world is different. It may be truly unhackable but I suspect that it will be cost prohibitive.

CCP is invested heavily in quantum entanglement for the purpose of perfect comm security. And the CCP is developing the tech north of us in Canada.

Have you watched Nova’s Quantum Entanglement episode?

What do they mean by unhackable? Maybe the information can't be read in transit, but someone could send something down the fiber, that when opened on the other end trashes the attached computer system.

So long as we demand that we get pretty much everything off the internet for free, there will be ads, cookies, etc. that can all be vectors for hacking.

I have a superficial understanding, but the basic idea involves the destructive nature of simply observing — this is the “quantum” factor. So for secure communications, transmit the data in parallel quantum channels, and if the received data doesn’t match, it’s been observed. To skirt observing, transmit tiny chunks at light speed in a randomized manor. I’m guessing...

If an app is a worm or virus from the get-go, and it is sent down this “unhackable” fiber, then it will be guaranteed to work it’s tragic magic when it gets to its destination.

I believe this is more about secrecy of the data during transmission, and not so much the impact at the endpoint. For example, a new virus may go undetected on the host/endpoint, but that would be short-lived until its signature is discovered — the virus itself could not remain undetectable as its not in a quantum state on the host its been realized.

Strangely enough, I have reconsidered what I think. I read some articles about how other things have decreased in cost over the years and it occurred to me that the same could apply. Human ingenuity can be amazing as well asap the drive to gain wealth.

So, I think I might see it in my lifetime.
