Mother, daughter donate 80,000 'child support' pennies dumped outside home

One Richmond family got a shocking delivery last month when 80,000 pennies were dumped on their front lawn. Now, they're using the money to help those in need.

"I just turned 18. When I was in the middle of class, my dad came by. He had rented a trailer," Avery Sanford, a Deep Run High School senior, said. "He pulled up in front of the house and turned the trailer on so it dumped out all the pennies on the grass and my mom came out and was like, 'What are you dumping in my yard?' She didn't know who it was until he shouted, 'It's your final child support payment."

The act had an impact on the teenager.

"It's not just my mom he's trying to embarrass, it's also me and my sister and it's upsetting that he didn't consider that before he did that," Sanford said.

Once the pennies were picked up, Sanford and her mom decided to turn a bad situation into a positive one.

Every penny of Avery's last child support payment will be donated to Safe Harbor, a domestic abuse center.

"Turning around and donating that money to moms and children in need, I feel like that really turns this situation into a positive. You can learn from it," Avery said.

There’s never a reason for one person to hit another person (unless that person is defending his or her life from a physical attack).

This is not directed at you but I’ve grown beyond the need to qualify my observations and experiences when I wrote or so them

White Christians have been as browbeaten to do that same as southern women always say “I’m sorry “ for any minor infraction

I’ve trained myself to refrain from “men are just as bad” or “I’ve got black friends”

If one criticizes blacks or liberal Jews or Latino voting habits etc here then one must qualify it by saying something positive or relative that affirms or exonerates or makes it relative

When one slams white Christians in particular southerners....no one ever qualifies but hey Johnny Cash was cool or maybe Billy Graham was ok u know...

I recounted my experience with divorce and child support and community property and alimony which all things being equal most definitely is stacked against the man....no question

And most white divorced dads do in fact pay child support but the numbers of blacks and Latino dads who are behind or don’t pay is staggering to say the least...most black men are at least six months late and nearly one third pay nothing

So yes there is obviously another side ...and it’s the usual suspects

What children need as much or more is their dad in their life especially boys need dads ...even more critically

she just wants to win, luckily for you she didnt care if she took male or female clients

He could have just written a check for $800 and been done, but he decided to go to the trouble of getting 80,000 pennies from a bank. Loaded them in a trailer. Drove the trailer over to the ex’s house, and dumped them. Guy sounds super-immature.

No matter the circumstances of the divorce or the child support agreement, whether fair or unfair to him, what his daughter will always remember is that her father thought it more important to make a childish statement rather than just paying the final child support payment and perhaps now that she’s 18 and no longer getting support, trying to build a meaningful relationship with her. I think he probably burned that bridge.

• Reporter looks bored -- he either found this story on the girl's Facebook or the police blotter, reluctantly pitched it to producer knowing it would pad his b-roll the right way, and got jackpotted when she said yes, run with it.
