In the summer of 1972, Alice Cooper and David Bowie blared from the radio as the country prepared itself for a presidential election later that year. (Incumbent Richard Nixon trounced George McGovern, the South Dakota Senator.) In the San Fernando Valley, teens and people in their early 20s were cruising up and down Van Nuys Boulevard, then they parked and hung out. Photographer Rick McCloskey, who grew up in the Valley, took his camera and chronicled the scene.

Ah, the bygone days of the ol’ “hickory shampoo.”
It’s not lost on me the world’s gone to Hell at the same rate The Law softened up on crime.
I don’t care about your explanation..
I worked my ass off to be able to retire early...
6 or 7 days a week, 20 or 12 hours a day, for DECADES...
What you say is an insult, and I resent you...
10 hours, not 20
I had that striped shirt and the white belt. Rose on pink, wore it with a pair of Cranberry colored bell bottoms. Memories. My girlfriend/late wife looked like the leggy blonde in the white shorts on the first page. Never owned a Mustang, but did own 68 two door Tempest. Silver with black interior.
bttt
I remember running around barefoot all summer long.
That’s a 700+ mile trip….
Dad had a ‘69 LeMans 2-door post body.
Here, a classic Volkswagen Beetle, center, on Van Nuys Boulevard... He noted the Pintos to both the right and left of the BeetleThe Pinto and its American competitors, the Vega and the Gremlin, were all designed to compete with the VW Beetle, mimicking its wheelbase, engine size, etc., everything except its build quality and design integrity.
As you clearly point out, your work schedule was a choice you made; for many of your predecessors, it wasn't.
During "gas wars" we'd see prices drop to .20 or even lower.
I ain’t weak....I’m as determined and keep pushing as possible regardless how awful I feel sometimes..my peers were much more manly ..technology has created a lot of leisure ...there is that too..
These 1960s kids were not weak.....Tilt Meyers was a badassed kid...the tall blonde one....the 60s gets blamed for everything...I just don’t buy that...seeds for the 60s was laid prior to then and the leaders of the 60s were not boomers but rather red diaper babies the grandkids of communists from Germany and Eastern Europe whose group had been revolutionizing since the Bolshies and other socialists...and even before ...and they brought it here....and to be honest it’s still a continuation of that now today....we are no doubt whatsoever a more leftist nation today in part due to thisr efforts and unlimited immigration of POC.....1960s civil rights activists and other lefties were just a chapter....
Freepers like to think any pot smoker is a leftist but that is erroneous .....all my social group and extended family are conservative baring maybe 1-2%....60% are casual pot smokers either nightly or weekly
Breaks my heart...I had a brand new red 67 Beetle that I used during my 3 year tour of duty in West Berlin. Loved it!
A red Beetle? You were the Man!
Did you live it or are you just dredging up news events that you heard about?
“California was still The Golden State. Miss those days.”
American California culture hadn’t yet been immigrated out of existence. That was just starting thanks to the 1965 immigration act.
I miss when Orange Grove had orange groves.
No. It is not. It is between Memphis and Amarillo but I was about half way between Amarillo and Memphis, about 350 miles to each.
I said that, “both about the same distance”.
I said nothing about from Memphis to Amarillo as a single trip.
