Weekly Garden Thread - June 5-11, 2021
June 5, 021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 06/05/2021 5:12:14 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Feeding them to your perch is a great idea.

Someone designed an over water trap:

Hope I don't have them that bad this year!

No, not nuts because you want to eat after the “Great Reset!”

Wow, nice lettuce! (Where do you get the time to do all these things?)

75 tomato plants = a lot of canning or you really have a big family!

Which LEAF goes with the pink bloom? Looks like it’s growing up among other things?

Messing up a book like that is sacrilege!!

At most, I might have bumped a display with my oversized backpack, but I would’ve helped put it back after.

Over on Permies.com there have been a lot of people reporting on their various biochar experiments. One thing that I found interesting was that well-made biochar can hold its own volume in water, in a way that makes it very hard to dry it back out, but at the same time plants are able to access that water. A few people have even reported that it works to hold water in desert conditions, making it easier to undo some of the desertification in their area.

Might come in handy during a drought!

I’m retired! And I start my days at 6am, rain or shine. Also, Beau does the heavy lifting for me. He builds the stuff and does the tilling; I grow the plants and make it pretty and productive. Teamwork! :)

OK. I’m going to stick with California Poppy until someone else comes up with something!

Anyone have one of those ‘Plant ID’ aps on their fancy phone that can help?

I just have a flip-phone, and I’m lucky to get 1 bar where I live. On a good day. If I hold a lightening rod in one hand and stand on one foot. On top of the barn. ;)

LOL! I’d have remembered. ;)

In my dreams I am continually STRAIGHTENING or re-filling product displays at Jung’s or Seed Savers.

Never got PTSD while in the Army managing PSY OPS, but I sure have it from managing civilian RETAIL operations! ;)

Finally checking in on the thread this week. We had a wedding to help set up for a friend on Saturday, then partied all night that night. Sunday ended up being a day of rest after that! I got a little gardening in yesterday afternoon in between rain showers, which it looks like I will be dealing with most of this week. At any rate, hubby and I love mushrooms so I will have to try this recipe very soon. Even though I’m trying to cut down on the amount of butter I use, this recipe has me intrigued, so I will definitely be trying it as a side dish soon!

I've also had the Black Laced Golden Wyandotte and the Silver Laced Wyandotte in the past. Every chicken in that line is very pretty, gentle and good egg layers, too.

Useful and beautiful, as should be all things in our lives. :)

Ellendra! We were at the local F&F (Dodgeville) this past week and they had a TON of nice chicks, (even Silkies!), ducks, pea foul, turkeys, etc. Really impressive selection and hard not to slip a few into my pockets! It's got Beau thinking...which makes me happy. :) I'm kind of getting chicken fever again. Might end up having a coop where my She Shed or Teardrop Camper WAS going to sit. ;)

I have those. They’re called Mexican Evening Primrose according to the tag from the replacement I just planted. I have mine planted in between roses. I don’t have a ton of sun in my beds, so many mature trees around. If anyone can direct me to a photo website to be able to insert directly into the thread, that will help me show you what I have.

These are what I have. I think they are the same as bitt’s. They spread once they are established. My roses are looking great at the moment. Hope it keeps up!

Check out my posts 138 and 139.

Let me know if you think these are the same as bitt’s. They’re called Evening Primrose around here.
