A REBEL DEMONSTRATION IN NEW-MEXICO

The Conflict of Jurisdiction in Baltimore

SPECIAL DISPATCH FROM WASHINGTON.

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, May 28.

The intention of Judge TANEY, in issuing a writ of habeas corpus for the prisoner retained by Gen. CADWALLADER at Baltimore, is to bring on a collision between the Judicial and the Military Departments of the Government, and if possible to throw the weight of the judiciary against the United States and in favor of the rebels. He is at heart a rebel himself, for on Saturday, when it was supposed the rebels were attacking the United States forces at Arlington, Judge TANEY expressed the wish that "the Virginians would wade to their waists in Northern blood." The animus of this exclamation will be apparent to any one; and the fact that Judge TANEY, old and infirm as he is, volunteered to go to Baltimore to issue a writ in favor of a rebel, shows the alacrity with which he serves the cause of rebellion.

MOVEMENT TOWARDS HARPER's FERRY.

It is probable that Gen. MCCLELLAN, to-day, made a movement towards Harper's Ferry, with such a force as would take the rebels prisoners, or disperse them to the four quarters of Virginia.

THE SEVENTY-FIRST AT ALEXANDRIA.

The Seventy-first, this morning, broke up at the Navy-yard, and moved down the river to Alexandria, to support the Michigan Regiment and the Zouaves. This makes a force of three thousand men in that city, besides a strong detachment of flying artillery. The Government has made arrangements for putting the Orange and Alexandria Railroad in operation. The track is being repaired, and rolling stock is to be procured from the Pennsylvania Central -- the resources of that road having been generously placed at the disposal of the Government.

It is truly surprising how Lincoln, elevated to the presidency with only 39 percent of the popular vote, was able to successfully levy war against the states. As you read history, many knowledgeable and influential people doubted, or outright opposed, his disastrous policies.

Then again, Kamala Harris had only three-to-four percent support for her ruinous ambitions and she now serves as president of the United States; and those writing the early drafts of history are saying she is one of the best ever.

Against those states in rebellion, having declared war on the United States.
Not so surprising when you consider that Confederate leaders themselves well understood what was happening, for example, CSA Secretary of State Toombs warned Jefferson Davis before Fort Sumter:

"Mr. President, at this time it is suicide, murder, and will lose us every friend at the North.
You will wantonly strike a hornet's nest which extends from mountain to ocean, and legions now quiet will swarm out and sting us to death.
It is unnecessary; it puts us in the wrong; it is fatal."[19]

Toombs was exactly right -- attacking Fort Sumter drove the South's natural Northern Democrat allies into alliance with those minority Lincoln Republicans, an alliance which lasted, more or less, until the war's end.

Nothing surprising about that.
