Weekly Garden Thread - May 29-June 4, 2021
May 29, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 05/29/2021 6:52:22 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Hope you had a nice birthday! My Dad and 2 Uncles and an aunt served in WWII. Grandfather served in WWI. Father in law WWII also. No doubt the greatest generation - your generation.

I'm posting this, because I just came across it in my 'archives' and it might not be useful right now, but it will be for some of you in a few weeks!

Diana's Easy Fridge Pickles. Find your favorite BIG jar with a lid. Make sure it's squeaky clean! Peel and slice enough cucumbers, red peppers and sweet onions to fill the jar to the brim. (They shrink when the hot brine hits them.) 2 cups water, 2 cups vinegar of your choice (I just use Heinz 57 plain old white vinegar), 2 cups sugar. Boil those together until the sugar is dissolved, stir a few times. (Should just be bubbling; doesn't have to be a rolling boil.) Add 2 Tbsp chopped garlic to the brine, then pour it into the jar. Let the mixture cool, then cap and put in the fridge. Tasty the very next morning. Keep stored in the fridge, and I tip the jar over or shake it up when I think of it. Totally yummy.

Rainy and cold. I think that living near a large metropolitan area and on a hilltop helps to keep me a bit warmer. I have a fence on the north side of the garden and that provides some shelter.

“Grand Solar Minimum is beating the Globull Warming.”

And that is it. The sun is the primary driver of Weather. Next are Volcanos’ gasses and dust.

Here's how my week will be shaping up! Hot, Hot, HOT! Luckily, my garden is shaded in the morning, and I'm getting up early with Beau before he heads off to work his 'temp job' for his brother - putting in a new road in a nearby town. I can get a lot done in the morning hours, so I plan on getting in the rest of my tomatoes, then I have the FUN job of filling in the gaps in the garden with various flowers. Yay! Puppy Shasta has figured out where the soft spots in the garden are for easy digging, so she's going to be learning about life on a leash in the very near future. I have a few pictures from around the farm that I'll share with you all later. I gotta get moving to Beat The Heat! Looks like the A/C will be going on by Sunday for the rest of the Summer. ;)

It was another soggy week here in Central Missouri, but the clouds blew away in time to get a couple nights of racing in at a nearby dirt track.

All of this cool, wet weather has been unkind to my garden. The tomato plants responded well to the Dragoon Dust treatment. If we get more rain this week I’ll probably need to treat them again, but they look much better than they did a week ago.

The squash and gourds I planted are up and looking nice. Cantaloupe only germinated 3/12, so I reseeded those. Cucumbers about the same, so I reseeded those. Same deal with the pole beans. Soil temps just haven’t been where they need to be for good germination.

I got all of the weeding done yesterday after I got home from the racetrack. Planted a row of turnip and rutabaga seeds. Garlic looks really nice. It should be ready to harvest in early July. I’ll follow the garlic with a couple rows of okra.

One of the two new rhubarb divisions is looking good. The other one didn’t look good when it got here. I’m hoping for it to take off, but right now it looks like that one is not going to make it.

Only with the wife....not at work.

I was on a call the other night that required SGT attention and as I was following my two officers down severely sloped back yard I looked up at the stars and blurted out “I could be in Texas right now” my officer said “did you just say I could be in Texas right now?

The super moon was in the distance just above an elevated portion of land....it was a beautiful night among a crazy night for calls that included a large tik to party with “youngsters” jumping on poloce cars to tweak and the state agency in charge if kids who are wars of the state....they abandoned a few kids. The agency we call when kids are abaondoned....they abandoned kids in a parking lot.

Very nice! I love those kind of garden lay-outs. Needs spinach, though; a powerhouse vegetable, for sure!

I’m being VERY good this season, as far as not crowding anyone, and I am planting more spinach in the shade tomorrow to see if I can get it to last longer into the season for me.

We’re going straight to Hot & Humid this week, but I must say as far as ‘Springs’ go, this one has been absolutely lovely. :)

See me on Saturday when it’s 90 degrees with 100% humidity, LOL!

If you have time in the upcoming weeks, can you post some Swiss Chard recipes? I am determined to fall in love with it this season; I’ve planted more than ever before. ;)
