Maybe the best song ever written. Look for other songs from this same session on youtube. There are some great ones.

The line - you know the line - makes it a candidate though.

Not sure, there are several lines in it that are great. "But I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time." Is that it?

The arrangement, with the words "I hear you singin' in the wires," coming the violins playing super high, like the wind playing with a wire. That's a killer too.

Along with By The Time I Get To Phoenix, those two songs knocked it out of the park for Jimmy Webb and Glen Campbell.

I happen to think that MacArthur Park was a masterpiece also, but it didn't fit so beautifully into 3:05.

Glen always plays those Ovation Guitars. I wish I had his collection.

The best Orchestra Piece.

That Glen Campbell could play.

I do understand it was written after seeing a lineman on a pole in the middle of nowhere. Coincide the thoughts of your present feelings and impose them on the lineman.

You have a song.

To me, It is the imagery that invokes that really grabs me.

He could sing anything and play anything - at a level that no one else really imagined.

As to the Jimmy Webb Highwaywoman comment from the other poster. Hey, songwriters got to eat too.

I work in the HV industry. The fact it was noticed as a lonely job that must be done, very impressive. He introduced a personal feel that really hits home.

Glen Campbell is the best guitarist of my time on this earth.

It is only later in life that I have come to enjoy country western. As a young man in the military, I didn’t like it all. And some guys really liked it and played it a lot.

I would dig it there now...:

They were right, and I was wrong!

Thats all good.

Music and such is a gift. It takes time to open it.

It's the look on the face of Roy Clark in Gentle On My Mind that really gets me. What a combination of appreciation, admiration, and sadness, from one master musician to another.

A guy was spotted on a pole outside of Wichita.

He was by himself.

#1 hit in America.

That is the Creator.

Indeed. I love music, just love it in nearly ALL iterations. (cannot appreciate rap though)

And I love having music available electronically. I have soured on some aspects of technology with smart phones and aspects of the Internet, but I enjoy being able to listen to good music anytime I want.

In the 18th century, this clearly would have been regarded as magic.

Which confirms for me that this is good stuff...:)

See...just your saying that and hearing the music in my head made me think of that time when the sun is just about down...

...stop. You are probably going to laugh at this. I was going to start describing the imagery it conjured up in my brain, the golden rays of setting sun making everthing it hit look as if it had been dipped in gold...blah blah blah

And I suddenly thought "Gad, am I describing the ALBUM COVER or something without realizing it???"

Anyway, this is kind of what I see:

One more thing-you said you work(ed) in the industry? There are some parts of that line of work that seem unbelievably dangerous.

My wife and I were driving along the Cape Cod Canal where there are some high tension lines, and we spied a helicopter with a skid perched on the tower as a guy worked (kind of like what these guys are doing in the image below).

I could only shake my head. This is what I thought:

Definition of Stones: "I think I'll get out of this helicopter onto this tower wearing a harness with gusts of wind and electric lines that will vaporize me if anyone makes a mistake. No problem."

Pretty much.

He could make it sing. And he could sing as well.

Merle said “If God ever gave one man too much talent in one body, it would be Glen”

There you have it.

You know what it is.

I'm sure Mr. Clark knew all about Glen Campbell's health problems. I would imagine he was thinking about... well, you know what he was probably thinking about.

If I'm right about that, the fact that Roy Clark could find the strength not to shed a tear was impressive. I'm sure I could not. In fact, I cannot even now find that strength, watching the video from years ago. Clark must have been a fine man.
