Investigators were preparing to seek an arrest warrant for a defrocked Roman Catholic priest long considered a suspect in the 1972 killing of a western Massachusetts altar boy shortly before his death last week, a prosecutor said Monday. Incriminating admissions Richard Lavigne made in a series of recent interviews while in a medical facility further implicated the longtime suspect in 13-year-old Danny Croteau's death, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni told reporters.
Gulluni said his office was prepared to prosecute Lavigne for Croteau's killing, but he died Friday at the age of 80 before he could be arrested.

Hopefully someone will see that he isn’t buried on hallowed ground.
He plead guilty in 92 to molesting young parishioners. Sentenced to 10 years probation and it took until 2003 to defrock the bastard. Pathetic
Looked like Billy Mummy......................
Sheesh. Good to see you posting, deport. Thanks for that one.
Satan is stoking the fires of HELL for one of his friends!
They always seem to get only 10 years probation.
Unbelievable
"He will face that higher power now"You people (organized religion) don't even know your own rules.
How do you know he hasn't already been to confession and forgiven for all of his sins?
Isn't that one of the phony benefits of belonging to the church?
Our society is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Jesus' admonition about little ones, millstones, and the depth of the sea.
Yet the parents allowed the visits to continue. The mind boggles.
I read elsewhere that he was removed from ministry by his bishop in 1991. The final decision from the Vatican only came in 2003. He was not working as a priest all that time. The Vatican moves slowly but his bishop did the right thing in the meantime.
“Yet the parents allowed the visits to continue. The mind boggles.”
...having such a strong belief in the Church that they can do no harm, is how my Catholic friends are.
Jesus sets the rules, we don’t. He alone knows our hearts and He loves the repentant sinner, even the rapist and murderer. If he made a good and full confession then he is in the grace of God. I don’t know the state of Lavigne’s soul at death any better than you do but whether he is forgiven or condemned he has now faced God’s judgement.
None of us should wish Hell on anyone, no matter how evil their actions. We need to see to our own sinfulness and deal with that.
There was no lifetime probation at the time of their crimes. There is now.
Not any more
Too bad they have to even have probation on the table.
