A missing 69-year-old fisherman was found alive on Sunday after surviving 17 nights in the Oregon wilderness alone, authorities said.
Harry Burleigh survived in the wilderness for over two weeks after going missing. Harry Burleigh survived in the wilderness for over two weeks after going missing. Facebook Search and rescue crews had been looking for Roseburg resident Harry Burleigh since he went missing May 7 after a camping trip in the Twin Lakes area.
On Sunday afternoon, a team found him after calling his name near where they’d found a shelter he’d built for himself days earlier, an announcement from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said. “He was found to be walking and complaining of minor pain, but was in stable condition,” the statement said.

CLUE: He is still wearing his college sweatshirt.
Get lost in a 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile plot? You’ve got to be kidding me!
At 69, he was probably in the class of ‘74 or so, and perhaps he wears the sweatshirt because he has fond memories of college days. OSU was not particularly liberal then; the hippies were in Eugene and Portland. Also, Douglas County isn’t (or wasn’t, at least) much like Multnomah or Lane. There are plenty of conservatives in Oregon, but the liberal population centers tend to outnumber them, as in too many western states.

One of Dad’s favorite jokes:
A fellow was stuck on his rooftop in a flood. He was praying to God for help.
Soon a man in a rowboat came by and the fellow shouted to the man on the roof, “Jump in, I can save you.”
The stranded fellow shouted back, “No, it’s OK, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me.”
So the rowboat went on.
Then a motorboat came by. “The fellow in the motorboat shouted, “Jump in, I can save you.”
To this the stranded man said, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”
So the motorboat went on.
Then a helicopter came by and the pilot shouted down, “Grab this rope and I will lift you to safety.”
To this the stranded man again replied, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”
So the helicopter reluctantly flew away.
Soon the water rose above the rooftop and the man drowned. He went to Heaven. He finally got his chance to discuss this whole situation with God, at which point he exclaimed, “I had faith in you but you didn’t save me, you let me drown. I don’t understand why!”
To this God replied, “I sent you a rowboat and a motorboat and a helicopter, what more did you expect?”
I moved to Beau’s 160 acre farm 5 years ago; I’ve gotten lost in our woods two different times, LOL!
Never overnight, but it was maddening enough!
Now I think of the different parts of the woods as ‘rooms’ and I can find my way around just fine.
Except the ‘Pet Cemetery.’ I stay the h#ll OUT of there, LOL!
I tell the same joke

“Lost In The Woods” Ping!
At 78, I would think that that would be SOP.
At his age, and after that amount of time…if the guy didn’t have a clue he would have been carried out.
That’s the same in many parts of New England. If you know where you went into the forest, there are very few places where you would not cross a road or stream within 5 miles.
Then, turn yourself downstream or downhill and you will find civilization. Perhaps not in Northwest Maine, but just about everywhere else.
People can get lost 50 feet from their camp site.
Stay off the moors!

Yes, if you don’t post a status update for more than 48 hours, they send out a search party...
Gawd, I LOVE that movie! Wish it had a happier ending though. :(
The special effects for the time were really something, though slightly cringe-worthy these days. ;)
