If you hike in the mountains south of Pocatello, ID, carry a sidearm. A 44mag is recommended. Cougars and black bears are part of the abundant wildlife. If you are out by Soda Springs, add grizzly bears to the list.

I always carry either my Kimber 1911 .45 ACP or 6” Colt Trooper MK III .357mag, AND the AR-50 Beowulf .50 cal w/ 375gr HPs, whenever I go out into any wilderness.
