Jewelry maker Pandora moves toward lab-made diamonds
cnbc ^

Posted on 05/15/2021 4:13:18 PM PDT by BenLurkin

Pandora’s new collection of lab-grown diamonds will be launched initially in the United Kingdom and will be available in other key markets next year, it said.

Pandora said it expected the diamond market to continue to grow, with sales of lab-grown diamonds outpacing overall growth.

Pandora’s lab-grown gems will be made using a technology in which a hydrocarbon gas mixture is heated to 800 Celsius (1,472 Fahrenheit), spurring carbon atoms to be deposited on a small seed diamond, growing into a crystal layer by layer.

Pandora, which has until now sourced mined diamonds from KGK Diamonds, said it will get its lab-grown stones from suppliers in Europe and North America.

Mined diamonds already in Pandora stores would still be sold, it said.

I don’t know anything about this process, nor whether traditional diamond buyers will consider the product a good substitute for traditional mined diamonds.

But any non-coercive introduction of a substitute gives consumers another choice, and is therefore good.

My son says he is looking into buying one. Seems like he said it is 30% less.

Lab created diamonds are already readily available, but alot of people want natural diamonds(their value lies in the rarity), if something is created in a lab and is not rare it will have less value.

Some people don’t mind lab created diamonds as they look better, but there will always be people who prefer natural diamonds.

How could something that has no practical use be so expensive?

Well, I’d rather buy lab grown diamonds than Bill Gates’ lab grown ‘meat’.

Diamonds can be carved with lasers. You can also deposit colors by adding key elements. What I am saying here is you could literally create custom pictures on its surface. Imagine a diamond ring with something like that!

All other jewelry and diamond makers will be stroking out with anger over this, since fake diamonds cost less than real ones.

Also gold diggers will be upset too.

I know some COVID Karens that could produce a diamond if you stuck a lump of coal up their bum for three weeks.

Because of it's hardness diamonds are used in drills and many other things. They also conduct heat efficiently. If you could make glasses out of them they would be thinner than glass ones and much more scratch resistant. There is even the possibility of very high temperature transistors made out of diamond for when you need control equipment in hot places.

High quality natural diamonds are a rarity. If you want a D, VVS, 1 ct, round, you’re are going to pay a pretty penny. If you want a Z, I, 1 ct round, it’s not very expensive. Relatively speaking, of course.

I’m all for the lab created to get the color and clarity. Just my opinion, but I’m not a big fan of diamond jewelry.

Well, diamonds DO have a couple of practical uses:

They make an excellent abrasive.

And they make great anvils for experimental physics and materials science uses.

God forbid people should know about their artificial scarcity.

I should’ve specified just used for jewelry. They have no practical use. Why do they cost so much, and kept artificially scarce?

Questions I’m not sure I want the answers to.

Of course consumers are in charge, if they prefer “natural” diamonds so be it,
