I saw that coming when the panic cry for ventilators came out over a year ago.

Some real investigative reporting? Must have been a fluke. I’m sure that their media overlords will put an end to this.

I confess my ignorance. Do ventilators have a ‘best if used by date’? Of course Orange Man Bad was behind a rush to build ventilators—so maybe that’s why they have to be gotten rid of. Far better to dump them in a landfill than send them to Brazil. And of course we’ll never face another medical crisis from China again.

I get that they couldn’t sell then as ventilators, but I’m surprised that a salvage company wasn’t willing to take them off their hands for parts, or motors or something.

Why would they dump them?
Ventilators are not perishable goods.
Heck they could auction them off, governmsnt auctions of equipment all the time.

Why reuse and refurbish when you can get massive amounts of government money to make more?

Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical equipment was apparently just thrown away. Because we have more ventilators than we can possibly ever need or use. And the equipment cannot be used for anything else.
That is what happens when you have panic-buying funded by Government programs with unqualified supervision. Hundreds of thousands of dollars (millions really) get wasted. Maybe that is unavoidable in a short-term.
BTW, ventilators are a last-ditch salvage operation on very ill patients. The fatality rate starts at 50% for the first 24 hours, and goes up from there. 90% of patients who stay on ventilators longer than 24 hours will die. This is what working ER practitioners and anesthesiologists consistently tell me.
I believe them.
Better to spend the money on anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-coagulation medications, starting on the first day of symptoms. And yes, spend the money on vaccinations or mRNA treatments if we can do that safely.
We are learning at great cost how to deal with COVID. The key idea is to avoid repeating mistakes. And avoid mistakes from which we cannot recover.
