European leaders meeting in Portugal have called on the US to put forth an actual plan for vaccine waivers. Most in the bloc appear exasperated with US President Joe Biden’s proposal, saying it won’t help.
European Union and EU member state leaders meeting for a social policy summit in Portugal called on the US to present a clear plan for President Joe Biden’s proposal of waiving patents for COVID-19 vaccines as a way to boost global inoculations.
European Council President Charles Michel, who represents the bloc’s 27 national leaders, said, “We are ready to engage on this topic as soon as a concrete proposal would be put on the table.” Still, like other EU leaders, he voiced skepticism over the efficacy of such a waiver, saying it was not a “magic bullet.”
Instead, he articulated what opponents to Biden’s suggestion have been saying, namely, that patent waivers are not the way to increase vaccinations but rather increased production and distribution. “In Europe, we made the decision to make exports possible and we encourage all partners to facilitate the export of doses.”
Michel’s words echoed those of French President Emmanuel Macron, who said: “It misses the point to say that [a patent waiver] is the emergency. The emergency is to produce more and increase solidarity now.” …

Again Europe begs.
They all had the ability to do what Trump did. And they didn’t. Now they want Biden to help solve conditions they created by acting so slowly in 2020.
Instead of messing with the patents, they and Biden should work to increase Pfizer and Moderna production in the EU, in facilities under license from Pfizer and Moderna, not by Pfizer and Moderna giving up anything of their patents.
That’s not a waiver. It’s a usurpation of the drug company’s right to a profit from its research. That would be illegal if the Constitution meant anything in the current USA.
They need to get it together ...they criticized Trump, too
Trump with Operation Warp Speed got 3 vaccines developed in less than a year, Europe with more people to my knowledge does not have a single vaccine developed at this time..
Yet somehow we are getting demands placed on us to release the IP to everyone...I would say, pay your bills with respect to NATO and negotiate better trade deals and maybe we will release a vaccine to you....
I know all that is a pipe dream but the shear arrogance of the EU is off the charts..

"Europe" is taking the position that most freepers have taken, which is against Biden. Like the USA, European companies own intellectual property in some of the most successful vaccines, including Pfizer/Biontech, Astrazenica, J&J (Janssen) and others. These vaccines can be produced in in sufficient quantities in the USA and Europe, or be licenced to manufacturers in Canada, India and others. The manufacturers are just trying to stop the theft of their intellectual property by CHINA. Biden wants to give the technology to China that has taken US and European companies over a decade to develop.

So Russia, Communist China and India can steal the vaccines for distribution and take credit for what Trump funded?
Europe is AGAINST Biden's plan. They own as much intellectual property in these vaccines as we do. It is BIDEN who wants to waive patents and give our intellectual property to China.
