Angel Hernandez ‘Blinded by Scoreboard’ in Worst MLB Ump’s Latest Blunder
New York Post ^ | May 5, 2021 | Mollie Walker

Angel Hernandez has certainly lived up to his reputation in the first month of the 2021 MLB season.

During the Indians-Royals game in Kansas City Tuesday night, Hernandez admitted that he essentially guessed on a play in the bottom of the third that had to be overturned due to his mistake, which he said was a result of getting “blinded by the outfield scoreboard.”

With runners on second and third, Royals catcher Salvador Perez hit a deep fly ball to right-center that landed between two outfielders on the warning track. But Hernandez, who was stationed at first base, signaled that the ball had been caught.

That said, if it is one of the LED signs, they can be quite bright. Certainly I don’t like them when I am driving around at night.

umpires are egregiously bad across the board this season. it’s as though they’re p*ssed off about the robo-ump experiment in MiLB, and they (and their union) are itching for a confrontation. suicidal tactics, if you ask me.

having said that, joe west, cb bucknor, and angel hernandez are easily the worst three umpires in baseball.

The NFL had the best refs/officials of any sport, until Roger Goodell.

I had trouble watching on a computer screen telling if the ball was caught or not. It had to be difficult to see. They should probably disallow illuminated scoreboards at field level, where they can interfere with the players’ and umpires’ vision.

The robots are coming—and the umpires are making it happen...should be fun to watch pitchers and batters curse at the robot!

There was a one eyed NFL player decades ago - during a game, one of the referees asked him what he would do if he lost that remaining eye, he said: “Then I will become an official”.

there is not a scoreboard that would have interfered with his view of the ground, which is where the ball landed.

he’s a horse’s a$$, and always has been.

Here's a clip of the play in question. As you can see, the outfield wall at Kauffman Stadium is all bright lights, ads and scores of other games. The two outfielders went for the ball and it dropped between them. The view from first wasn't that great but Hernandez shouldn't have made the call if he wasn't sure.
