My wife bought a fancy carpet covered climbing tree for her mother’s cat. The cat, of course, preferred to sit in the shipping box the tree came in.

I wonder how they'd handle this?

"The cat...preferred to sit in the shipping box"

It's not just a thing with house cats -

We were at the Utica zoo a few years back and they had refrigerator boxes in the lion's area - these huge lions were laying in them and playing in and out of them just like little house cats - pretty funny.

Sounds like something you'd find in The Journal of Irreproducible Results

Good idea for a cat toy.
1st described in the 1890's. Were found in Celtic and Egyptian Sites. The Rattleback has an uneven shape. The rolling and pitching axis are in different places. The shaking or rattling causes rotational energy to move between these two point, causing the change in spin direction. | Rattleback - Cool Physics Toy | Oct 23, 2012 | Google me Darnit
