I just went to the Social Security website to apply for SS while there is still some money left. I could have applied and started collecting over 4 years ago but I wanted to wait until full retirement age so if anything ever happened to me there would be more money for my wife and her new Boy Toy. I went to the site, clicked on apply, filled everything out and when it was done it said I applied for Medicare. I'm not even interested in Medicare. I live in Spain and pay for my own private insurance. So did I apply for Social Security or not?
You can’t refuse Medicare Part A when you enroll in Social Security. You can refuse Part B, depending on your situation.
So I would say you have signed up for Social Security, yes. Especially since they asked where to put the money.
You can opt out (under current rules) from the Medicare requirement if you have outside insurance.
Being in Spain should qualify.
Keep in mind, that as the Dems pretend to “balance” the budget, everyone will once again be required to buy Medicare.
You apply for Medicare and SS on the SS site.
Medicare comes attached to SS benefits (for a monthly fee), so it sounds like you’re about to get both. And good luck trying to shake of the Medicare part. I don’t need it but my private insurance co demands I keep it as they became the secondary police with Medicare being primary.
They haven't asked where to put the money. I just saw that one of the options was to set up a direct deposit but I haven't done it.
Sounds like you have probably gotten it done if they gave you a final message like leveling up in a video game. They should also send you a letter.
I also applied at their site and it was fairly easy. You should also complete application for My Social Security. That step should make it easier to contact them.
I think you want Medicare. I have most of my business done at the VA, but I took the advise to take Medicare as a backup.
Nice thought about direct deposit. That could be important in Spain and also more complicated, if you don’t use a US bank.
Is it worth applying for at 60? I know formally I have 6.5 years left to hit the magic 67. I’m afraid that the number will change to 72 before the elections in 22.
Well, I’ve never been to Spain.
But you can’t have Medicare there.................
I am on SS and also decline medicare since I have VA coverage.
/ah no...now it’s stuck in my head
Well I kinda like the music.
does that help?
When I applied for SS I was told in no uncertain terms, both in writing and on the telephone, that if I opted out of Medicare that my own, paid insurance would be terminated immediately!
bfl
Are the ladies insane there?
Do the monthly deposit.
My wife and I have both of our checks deposited directly.
We got 2 out of 3 of the Covid payments deposited directly and one direct mail of their ATM card.
You have to be 62 to collect SS: This is from their site:
“You can get Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62. However, we’ll reduce your benefit if you retire before your full retirement age.Jan 1, 2021>”
/quietly pounding head on table
Nope.
:D
I did the math once and discovered I was better off taking SS as soon as I could.
