A Florida man and his alleged accomplices traveled to Portland with the sole purpose of breaking into women’s cars -- typically by cruising parks, day cares and gyms -- to steal their purses, wallets and identification and then recruited locals to cash almost $100,000 in forged checks at banks around town, federal prosecutors said. . .
Damian B. Fletcher, 27, and his alleged cohort found women with drug addictions and homeless people to impersonate the victims and collect the money . .
Fletcher was sentenced Monday to just over three years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. He was also ordered to pay $98,733 in restitution.
Fletcher and his group broke into at least 32 cars in the Portland area and stole $98,733 after cashing 22 checks at five banks, according to court records. The banks were able to stop payment on some of the checks but ultimately lost $57,650, prosecutors said.

How much time for his accomplices?
Florida man strikes again!
I’m fed up with the epidemic levels of crime . If it’s not this its the never ending phone, text and email scams. It has gotten far worse in recent months. I put a chainsaw in the local classifieds last weekend and immediately got at least 10 phone and text scams. Every day I get two dozen or more telemarketing calls, text scams re undelivered packages and so on. I’m going to be arrested, have my utilities shut off, have Netflix locked (I don’t have Netflix) and have my bank accounts taken by the IRS several times a day.
None of the supposed spam/phone blockers seem to work and I think that these apps like Nomorobo sell users numbers to scammers. Arrgh.
When I put an item on Craig’s list (which I rarely do) I use a “burner” email account, and ignore everything that isn’t a serious inquiry.
At 3 years he’ll be out in about 14 months if he stays out of trouble in prison.
True but this is Florida Man we are talking about.
That guy again! He's always up to something stupid.
Why did they fly to Portland?
It would seem that a lot of women in Floriduh leave ids in their vehicles.

Guess they figured cops don’t actually do anything in Portland so it would be a safe place to commit a crime. They must not have realized that they have to dress all in black, cover their faces and do the crime at night.
Some years ago some guy in Los Angeles would leave Fri nite, drive many hundreds of miles to National Park Campgrounds, steal stuff, and drive back Sunday.
So that his crimes were far from his home.
Forgot how he was caught. Seems someone maybe noticed he was gone every weekend . . . (don’t rememeber any more).
Thanks. I think that my old memory recalled the perp you cirted.
Unfortunately women do stupid things sometimes, like leave their purse in their car when they run in the daycare to get the kiddos. This was a huge deal a few years ago at the University of South Carolina on-campus daycare. They also leave their purses in the car when they go in the gym or park to jog a trail. Thieves know this. Stop it girls!
