Three-time Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser dies at 87

Racing champion Bobby Unser died in his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico of natural causes at the age of 87. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway made the announcement on Monday.

Unser was a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, taking victory at the iconic race in 1968, 1975 and 1981 and is part of the only pair of brothers to ever win that race. Just ten drivers have won the Indianapolis 500 three times and only two have won in three decades, Unser and Rick Mears.

Team Penske released a statement, offering condolences to his family and reflecting on his career.

The first person to die of natural causes in over a year.

Give it 10 seconds. The flat earthers will be here to say he died of a Covid vaccine administered somewhere in the same area code that he resides.

Indy racing in Bobby’s era was the best. Back when the cars were driven by Americans. The Unser brothers, Foyt, Andretti, Donohue, Ruby, Revson, Mears, Rutherford, Johncock, etc. And Bobby was as good as any of them in his prime. Took more chances on the track than his brother Al, who was steadier. The Unsers pretty much owned the Pikes Peak run for a long time.

flat earthers would be the ones that think unproven science is what you supposed to inject into your arm.

I tried to watch the indycar race yesterday but it was horrible. No familiar names and all European drivers.

That was a different era in so many ways, in racing, sports in general, and society in general.

Loved Indy car racing in that era - Bobby Unser was my favorite. I believe he was pursued by the Feds for trespassing in a wilderness area with a snowmobile a while back. I believe he got lost & was in trouble, but no mercy from the Feds.

I didn't even know it ran yesterday. Nobody in the local bar even mentioned it or asked to turn it on.

Back when the cars were driven by Americans.

Jim Clark won the '65 Indy. Bobby Unser finished 19th. Jackie Stewart led most of the '66 race, and Clark finished 2nd. Graham Hill won it. So the mid-60s weren't exactly the American era at Indy.

Yes, those were good days!. I didn’t meet Mario until after moving to Fort Worth from Indy, sometime in the 70s, I think.

I may have bumped into him at a Home Depot in Albuquerque many years ago. I knew it was one of the Unsers, and I literally took a step backwards and bumped into him, but no harm no foul.

American Indy car racing has been going downhill since CART split from USAC in 1978.

Cookie cutter cars and cookie cutter drivers with names that can’t be pronounced. No thanks.

Dirt track sprint car and midget racing, on the other hand, has never been better than it is now.
