CHICAGO (AP) — The days of paying cash on the Illinois Tollway are gone forever.
The tollway announced Thursday it is permanently eliminating cash toll collections and will accept only I-Pass, E-ZPass or online payments. Customers unable to pay online can pay by check or money order.
The move comes nearly a year after the tollway suspended cash tolls in mid-March because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The tollway also said it will begin a program in May to help low-income drivers by waiving deposits on I-PASS transponders and adding $20 in tolls to people with household incomes up to 2 1/2 times the poverty line.

PING!
So what if you’re just passing through one time?
I remember when the I-520 floating bridge stopped taking tolls altogether. The bridge was paid for, so tolls were removed. Can you imagine them doing that today, on ANY toll road?
And now that it costs them basically nothing to charge tolls, I expect to see more and more of this. Especially as more and more electric cars are hitting the road.
Of course, it means they will also track everywhere you drive.
This eliminates the toll booth collector jobs.
It’s a pain in the neck, whenever I travel for business to a city and rent a car... half the time I forget to also rent an EZ pass (and/or they forget to offer one). In Chicago there was a 25 cent offramp to the airport. Which was just a stupid low price. Coins only. No quarter, no pay, get a ticket for $35.
So.. You need an ID...
you get a bill in the mail...
“So.. You need an ID...”....Yup, RACIST! Everybody knows people of color don’t have any way to identify themselves. /s
Then ignore em :P
I suppose they’ll send you a bill that you are supposed to pay, but then again, if you don’t pay tickets and such in Illinois, they’ll just forgive them in a few years anyway.
Which is odd because those were cushy sought-after jobs.
Autodystopia.
You can order your own ezpass even if you don’t live in an ezpass state. Virginia shipped one to me out in ‘flyover country.’ I use it for rental cars or when I roadtrip to the east coast.

It’s not bad enough that the toll system itself is self-sustaining institutionalized thievery, now it’s an income redistribution system too.
If I have to go up there, I have two choices: possibly get robbed and/or shot on 90/94, or get robbed only on 294.
Just a matter of time where prices at retail stores will be based upon your income.
You will be tracked one way or the other.
And yet tolls won't go down.
What do you think EZ-Pass is all about?
If you don't pay online when you can they will send you a bill...they take pics of your license plate.
