Meet the 12-year-old graduating high school and college in the same week
CNN ^ | April 28, 2021 | Rachel Trent

A 12-year-old in North Carolina used the downtime he had during the pandemic to take on a few extra classes in school.

Now, one year later, Mike Wimmer, of Salisbury, is getting ready to graduate high school and college -- in the same week.

Wimmer completed four years of school in one year -- two years of high school and a two-year associate's degree. He will graduate from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College on May 21, and from Concord Academy High School on May 28, where he is valedictorian.

But this wasn't always Wimmer's plan, he said.

The student was taking dual enrollment classes and realized that at the pace he was going, he just needed a few more classes to get his associate's degree by his high school graduation.

He said his GPA at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is 4.0, while his high school GPA is 5.45.

A love of robotics

Despite being several years younger than his classmates, Wimmer said he gets along well with them -- and was even nominated to Homecoming Court last year.

Wimmer, who has an interest in robotics, told CNN that he's "the math and science guy." He's always had an affinity for technology -- he got his first iPad when he was 18 months old, and wondered how it worked.

>>My Algebra teacher gave ME wisdom ... (he said it to the whole class, but I’m only responsible to and for myself) ... “Don’t try to understand Algebra ..... learn the rules and apply them and you’ll pass my class”

Today educrats have gone in reverse. Rather than simply learn the multiplication table 0-12, kids are taught to find multiple paths to understand WHY 3x6 is 18 and 12x12 is 144.

Ted Kaczynski was an intelligent child who skipped grades in school. At the age of 16, he entered Harvard on a scholarship...then became the unabomber.

Had a physics instructor during medical ultrasound training. He would say, ‘learn the concepts’ and at times of trying to remember the formulas the applied concepts of the problems were often leading to the solutions. Helped me pass the Physics Registry with good success. He was an awesome Instructor who could make you enjoy physics and it’s concepts.

Hubby used his GI Bill to get his Bachelor’s degree, despite working a 2nd job, ran out of funds to go for his Masters, so ended up as a Jr College Prof, Math, Electronics, Computer Science, same stuff he taught in A/B school for 18 yrs out of his 20 yrs in the USN. 20 yrs later retired as Dept. Chair, in Memphis, all the HS students from city schools were handed their math grades, a A/B was really a D a few C’s, needed Remedial math classes. County and foreign students didn’t, many went on to be Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers. Still teaches the Math portion for Extra classes for Ham Radio users @ 80. Retired in 2002. Served 58-78.

This CRT crap will be 1000% times worse than COMMIE CORE math.

Exactly. Both my boys started college classes at 15 through dual enrollment and graduated HS with Associate’s degrees and honors. Best thing they ever did. Didn’t waste time on AP classes. Youngest will be working on a Master’s of Divinity in a year...then doctorate. He wants to get everything over with before starting a family.

College prep classes and honors are weighted higher than standard HS classes. So an A in one of those is worth a 5 vs 4.

I have a VERY smart friend who went into medical research, Master’s in Bio-Chemistry, the whole bit. After several years of working in a lab, he decided he’d rather be a dentist!

No matter your intellectual abilities, if you don’t like what “they” think you should do, do what makes YOU happy.

He’s now comfortably retired, and glad for the change in career.

That’s a classic episode.
Also, Jethro went to Oxford.
Ms. Hathaway really loved her Oxford Man.

Can’t say how it works in the US, but it varies at Canadian universities. For example, I attended the University of Lethbridge and graduated with a 3.73 GPA (out of 4). IIRC, the University of Calgary rated their students on a scale of 7. It all depends on the scale the University uses.

“a high school GPA of 4.0 is nice, but it’s not going to put you at the top of the ranks of students applying for university admissions”

...which is absolute idiocy. Grade inflation makes a mockery of the system and puts way too much pressure on good students. IMHO, of course...

Right before he was handed it, he heard his father say, "When George Washington got a radio at two years of age, the first thing he did was wonder how it worked. That's a genius, for 'ya."

Many States have the Early College program. Instead of High School, kids enter college and earn both a college degree and a High School diploma. It’s easy enough to do. I left High School as a senior in college. We make far too much of college. K-12 is just a communist ploy to gain money for “education”.

“Not sure how I feel about a 12 year old graduating. I am sure he is quite intelligent but IMO he really shouldn’t be hanging out with 20-somethings. Unless they are nerds. Good thing he’s into robotics.”

Getting an AA in junior college isn’t exactly graduating college.

In real life, these kid genius stories usually turn out bad and are somewhat fake. A parent usually is behind it.

The kid genius is a trope but not necessarily real.

Yes, well I don’t disagree but I was referring to the headline “graduating high school” and presuming he’s off to some higher degree(s) at some point soon. Robotics school or what have you. Could be very precocious but college - or at least most colleges - aren’t really a good place for 12 year old kids.
