One of the reasons I stopped listening years ago, was when he divorced Allison. I had thought that behind it all, Howard was a good family guy. That shattered that illusion.
Fart jokes just don’t sell as well during a crisis.
I always liked though when he played the tapes of his Dad when he was little, “I told you not to be stupid, you moron!” “SHUP UP! SIT DOWN! SHUT UP! SIT DOWN!”
i thought Allison divorced him. he seemed devastated on the day he announced.
( maybe he had to give her half? idk)
shock has no long term staying power .his schtick had a limited life span and he was smart for leaving Am signal radio when he did becouse he got a big pay out and no one got to see the steady drop in listeners as the newest thing took his listeners away.
Stern was genuinely anti PC for a while and although he was obviously a Leftist, he made fun of Leftists, and I found it refreshing for a time, as I drove to work in the AM.
Back then, PC wasn’t necessarily an exclusively Leftist thing - and being anti PC had not become “criminalized”.
But at some point Leftists weaponized PC as a tool to exclusively shame conservatives... at that point, comedians like Stern were forced to choose: be PC or be cancelled.
For example, Seinfeld type humor would not fly today. Seinfeld (Larry David) made fun of stupidity, hypocrisy, awkwardness and absurdity regardless of political stripe.
Let’s face it, Leftists are some of the stupidest, most awkward and most absurdly hypocritical people you’ll ever meet, so they made a target-rich area for a sharp comedian - even a Leftist comedian couldn’t pass that up.
Think “All in the Family”. Making fun of Meathead’s Leftism was the funny part of that show - a show written by Leftists. They wanted to make money - they wanted to be funny.
So they went where the funniness was; the absurdity of wealthy Leftists running their mouths about sacrifice and idealism, when all they want to “sacrifice” is other people’s money and other people’s privilege - not their own. It’s absurd. It’s laughable. It is genuinely funny.
But now that Leftist comedians can no longer get away with making fun of Leftism, these comedians are totally defanged - totally unfunny.
I listened to him on DC101 in the early 80's. Used to set the tape player to record, go to classes, then listen to his bits at night. Like the time he and Estelle were hard up for money, so he dug Estelle's mother out of the ground to get the gold teeth out of her mouth....
I used to catch him on the same station when I was working in NOVA. Great show. I worked nights and listening to Grease was the perfect cool down to go to sleep.
I used to love when he would call up trying to catch a woman at home in the morning and ask her if she relieved her husbands sexual tension before sending him off to work.
A couple of times he got hung up on but mostly the gals played along. Great show, a lot of fun.
Hope he has a nice and relaxing life.
Well put.
“The Greaseman was way better. Way better.”
I agree wholeheartedly. I used to him on DC101 back in the 80s. Brillian.
“We thought Deliverance was a trainin’ film!”
Stern still sucks, but if you have Serius/XM, listen to channel 711 on the internet. It is Tom Petty’s Buried Treasures. He was the DJ every week for eight years for an hour show of what he liked. It can be anything from 40s swing to blues to Motown to Acid Rock. It is excellent.
You all are missing the main point!!! NEW YORK IS DEAD TO HIM ! ! NY IS DEAD TO EVERYONE BUT THIEVES, a nd HOMELESS!!
No doubt.
Strike One : Falling out with Captain Jenks.
Strike Two : Divorce makes people unfunny.
Strike Three : Satellite.
The O.J call was one of the greatest moments in TV history, "Say, looky here, I see O.J!" And then Al Michaels finally having to clue in Peter Jennings.
I was commuting back in those days in an expensive riceburner at a high rate of speed, and nearly drove off the road that morning...
Stern is an old man with long hair. He looked stupid 30+ years ago. He should get a pony tail to look cool : )
The decline began:
1) When Artie Lange self-destructed and left.
2) When Marcy Turk became Producer - no more edgy, politically INcorrect comics.
3) When he married Beth
