NEWS OF THE WAR: Arrival of the Seventh from New-York and the Massachusetts Troops; THE SECESION FORCES IN VIRGINIA (4/27/1861)
New York Times archives – Times Machine ^ | 4/27/1861

Mr. B.E. HUTCHINSON, of Wisconsin, who left Washington on Thursday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, kindly called upon us yesterday, with details of the latest news.

The Seventh Regiment of New-York, arrived in Washington on Thursday noon, having marched twenty miles to the Junction, and that without escort. They were, in fact, the pioneers of the route, and went because they had made up their minds to go any way.

The Eighth Massachusetts Regiment, meanwhile, had been at work repairing the railroad and engines, and arrived at Annapolis soon after the Seventh, having laid the rails, repaired the engine, and run the train.

The Seventy-first Regiment of New-York also marched 20 miles from Annapolis to the Junction. The road was, however, open from Annapolis to Washington, and troops were going as rapidly as possible.

Col. LAWRENCE'S regiment had 15 minutes' notice to leave Annapolis, and were ready within the specified time.

The conduct of the Eighth Massachusetts Regiment is deserving of the greatest praise. When Gen. BUTLER asked if any of them could sail the Constitution, fifty-four men stepped from the ranks, one of whom was the son of the man who built her!

A similar incident occurred when the General called for mechanics to put the dislocated engine together. One stalwart Yankee stepped from the ranks and said, "Well, General, I rather think I can -- I made that engine;" and in two hours the engine was at work drawing trains with the troops toward Washington. The efficacy of the stalwart six-footers with which the regiment abounds, was a most fortunate thing for the vast body of troops concentrating there.

Mr. HUTCHINSON saw the Seventh Regiment marching to the White House, amid the unbounded enthusiasm of the people.

Note on page 5 the Irish volunteers, first meeting at 7:00 PM.

I think we can expect great things from those fighting Irish!

Even witches can’t stop them.

Think of what happens if you turn one into a Knut.

My ancestral people were too much for the Romans apparently. They landed on the island, took one look at Finnigan and Fynn in their long wild hair and beards, no doubt whacking the heck out of each other and said “A Jupitari! Animals! Andiamo!*(* By Jupiter, they’re animals!Let’s get out of here!””)

Seriously. When the Romans did get to Ireland they really thought they’d come to the ends of the Earth.

That’s why they named the place “Hibernia’’. To ‘’hide’’ or a place not to go into.
