MAINE DMR EXPECTS 20+ ACOUSTIC SHARK RECEIVERS IN OCEAN WATERS THIS SUMMER
Q1065.fm/maine ^ | April 23, 2021 | DJ FRED

Following the fatal great white shark attack where a woman died off Bailey Island in southern Maine this past year, the Maine Department of Marine Resources began working with the Atlantic Great White Shark Conservancy and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, to figure out approximately how many of the big fish there are and where they are within coastal Maine waters.

For years now, the Atlantic Great White Shark Conservancy based in Chatham, Massachusetts, has tagged over 210 white sharks in the Cape Cod area. Tags pinned to white sharks then communicate with acoustic receivers moored in coastal waters, telling the folks on the mainland where a tagged shark is. This year, the Atlantic Great White Shark Conservancy will also install tiny video cameras within some of the tags, which should provide us underwater views as well.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources' Great White Shark Research Team installed two acoustic receivers in the water late last year, one off Bailey Island and then another near Popham Beach State Park. They chose both locations because it's where the seals are, a white shark's favorite food. No word from the state if any of the acoustic receivers got a hit from a great white shark or not.

This year, the DMR will install 20 or more acoustic receivers up and down the Maine coast to collect yet even more data on the status of great white sharks. While white sharks haven't been all that common off Maine, more and more are making their way here as the water warms in the Gulf of Maine.

When an acoustic receiver receives a "hit", the Atlantic Great White Shark Conservancy's Sharktivity App will then inform it's users where and when the hit took place.

This morning I was talking to a friend who is an active shark biologist and has been involved with the Cape Cod white sharks before day one, and during the early tagging operations. He is still very active here in Mass. but also helps out in Maine.

He told me that after the fatal attack in Maine last year several organizations had given some acoustic buoys to the Maine State Marine fisheries , who put them out at the end of last season (2020) He said they had enough white shark hits to indicate this coming summer is going to be a big year up in Maine for white shark awareness since the receivers will be out there all summer.

WE also talked about all the other organizations that last fall got in on the white shark "me too" movement.

So this coming summer expect to be inundated with local New England white shark info from a variety of sources.-Tom

There’s just so much we can learn from sharks!

Like how to rip the guts out of seals.

Racists are spending millions of dollars on white sharks but not one penny for black sharks.

Shark receivers? I’d think they’d want shark senders. Or shark sprayers. Or something like that. Unless they’re trying to help out the New Hampshire swimmers.

“Helping Sharks Make Music For 50 Years!”

And yet another remake of that feel-good song, Mack the Knife.

Oh the shark, babe
Has such teeth, dear
And he shows them
Pearly white
...
You know when that shark bites
With his teeth, babe
Scarlet billows
Start to spread

“Acoustic shark receivers”

Are they throwing a big reception for the sharks with nice acoustic music? I hope they behave themselves in the reception line.

The reason for the LARGE return of these predators is simply because they let the seal population rebound.....I grew up on the Cape (Cape Cod) and it was just second nature for the seals to be culled as they would eat the fisherman’s bounty! Animal rights groups put an end to that practice and the seals started hanging around again and PRESTO-CHANGEO ya gots its natural predator in abundance!

Remind him that great whites fear orcas, and will beat feet, uh, fins the heck out of the area when they hear orca vocalizations.

Underwater speakers are cheap.

I want to be named on the patent...

No sane person goes swimming in the ocean in Maine. Because it is to f*cking cold even in August. I spent 15 years of my youth and the last 20 years living on the coast of Maine and I can count on one hand the number of times I went swimming in the ocean.

Agreed-That is true of most New England waters and IMHO is the reason why we have so few shark attacks.
Very few people spend a lot of time in the water here.

If you notice the attacks occur on people who are surfing ,or wearing wet suits, or in Kayaks. Swimmers here don't spend a lot of time in the water, the others groups do.

If we had here in New England the warm water many places have in other parts of this country, and therefore more people in the ocean water for longer periods of time, I think I could guarantee many more white shark attacks. -Tom
