Takeout contributor Danny Palumbo recently wrote about how the fries at beloved West coast burger chain In-N-Out are very bad. Those are his words, not mine. These are now my words, not his: The fries at In-N-Out are bad. I still eat them, though, usually animal-style (mostly out of novelty, and yes, I know, I know, the fries get weird when the cheese starts cooling off, but I’m well aware of what I’m getting into).
I get the obsession with In-N-Out. The burgers are awesome, and I love my Double-Doubles, animal-style. If I’m in an area that has an In-N-Out, I’ll stop bye, It’s a solid place. But there are great burger places a lot closer to home, too, and I started to wonder: does the Midwest have a spiritual analogue to In-N-Out, something we can only get here, and which is special to us in the same way as Californians embrace In-N-Out? After doing some soul-searching I came to a conclusion. The answer is yes: We’ve got Culver’s.
Now, people often feel the need to compare In-N-Out with Shake Shack. This seems like an unnecessary, played-out, coastal ego war. Shake Shack is great too, but it’s brutally expensive. At the location nearest to me, a double Shackburger, fries, and shake, plus tax, costs around $20. Bye!
By the numbers, Culver’s has the bigger spread, by a long shot. In-N-Out currently has 358 locations in 7 states. Culver’s website indicates 796 locations (as of April 2021) in 25 states, The two states with the most Culver’s locations by far are Wisconsin (where it was founded) with 142 outlets and Illinois with 122. There are four lucky states that get to enjoy both In-N-Out and Culver’s: Utah, Arizona, Texas, and Colorado, for those who want to do a side-by-side comparison.

Yes, but is there a Ralph’s nearby?
I love I&O. I get fries and burgers Animal Style. Last week I was in the Carolina’s and drove through Culver’s. I ordered the Cod Sandwich and it was hands down the best fast food fish sandwich I’ve ever had.
Making my mouth water just thinking about it!
we used to have one and rallys and checkers.. meh..
“We’re not comparing fast food restaurants. We are comparing hamburger joints. Sheesh!”
In n Out is fast food.
Culvers is fast food.
I’m originally from Nebraska, so I can tell how many days the cow has been dead by the taste of the burger.
In Nebraska, Bronco’s and Runza are the best fast food hamburgers.
I’ve lived all over the country and have had about every burger, but Runza or Bronco’s beat every Texas or California based hamburger chains for a cheeseburger. No comparison.

Only been to Culver’s once, whil travelling. There are none near me. It was pretty good, though we waited a bit longer than I thought we should have.
Exactly!
My husband and I like In-and-Out when we are in San Jose. Burgers, Fries and a Shake— a nap and a long walk!!
Cabezon ... Beat the H out of cod caught the same day, along with the red snapper the wife had been preparing in case we were skunked.

See. Now we are two.
It figures-I’m in the far northeast corner of GA-a couple miles from the GA/NC border...
I have to agree that Culver’s is a great choice in the Midwest. However, like anyplace else who is doing the cooking and who manages the place makes a difference. I too have had meals at Culver’s that were sub par. Training and good work habits give consistent results. Sadly a lot of the grill staff in fast food places are high schoolers who lack the training and oversight to do a consistent good job. That said from time to time I have eaten at Culver’s and their burgers were spectacular
I’ve eaten a few times at each. I’ll take In-N=Out every time.
“ Not impressed.”
Trust me, at 3AM back in the early 80s it was crack. It has declined substantially
Forget it, In-N-Out fans, Culver’s is way better

Opinion: Indeed it is!
Maybe because it is in only one state.
We do stop by when on our yearly Visit The Family Trip.
Culvers fish is great.
Rd later.
We used to eat at In N Out all the time, but the last few years they suck. I complained to a manager that things aren’t the same, he assured me they were.
This was after my wife and I both went on a very low carb diet for a year, then she craved a burger. She was very disappointed, couldn’t eat it, wanted a refund. I did the same thing a year later and again wanted a refund.
I don’t think it’s just us going on a low carb diet though. The burgers were not made with care for one thing.
Here in Garden Grove there is a Tomy’s. Bastards.
Five Guys is way overpriced.
