Florida Gov. DeSantis Signs 'Strongest' Anti-Riot, Pro-Law Enforcement Bill in Country

The new law, which went into effect immediately, also allows local governments to be sued if they fail to stop a riot.

"As we saw last summer, some of the local governments are actually telling, not necessarily in Florida but throughout the country, basically telling these folks to stand down, telling police to stand down while cities burnt, while businesses were burnt, while people were being harmed," DeSantis said. "That’s a dereliction of duty.

"What our bill says, and what I’ll sign into law today, is that if you're derelict in your duty as a local government, if you tell law enforcement to stand down, then you're responsible for the damage that ensues. And if someone's been harmed, or their property has been destroyed, then they can sue you for compensation."

The law defines a "riot" as a violent public disturbance involving 3 or more people acting with common intent resulting in injury to others, damage to property, or the imminent danger of injury or damage.

The law also created a new second-degree felony called an "aggravated riot," when the riot has more than 25 participants, causes great bodily harm or more than $5,000 in property damage, uses or threatens to use a deadly weapon, or blocks roadways by force or threat of force.

Florida is looking better every day. But moving is such a pain.

DeSantis 2024! Hate to lose a great governor but it’s worth it to replace the thieving clown in office now.

And being Governor, DeSantis has a team in place he can bring to Washington, that’s something Trump never had.

And it’s way overcrowded with liberal snowbirds.

He better sign massive executive orders because the demographics are not on his side for the long term.

Can you imagine Walz or Whitmer signing a bill like this?

Most Americans are ignorant of the fact that up until the 1960s, many states had civil liability laws requiring cities to compensate private property owners whose property was damaged by riots. It is considered “inverse condemnation” under eminent domain laws.

Policing is government work, and allowing riots is ultimately a government / political decision. Property that is “taken” through riots therefore should be compensated by government.

When progressives took over American government, particularly American cities in the 50s and 60s, these laws were eliminated.

What this country is facing right now is the institutionalizing of riots. When that happens, the country is certainly over.

Respectfully disagree.

Desantis is preserving liberty in America (Florida) 10 times more than he ever could as president. I realize that may not be as sexy, but we need to shore up states and locally going forward. Think about it.

I usually visit in September. School’s back in service (pre-Covid), snowbirds haven’t migrated and it’s hurricane season. Get there between hurricanes and see how empty the tourist places are. No lines in restaurants. The water is still warm enough to dip in. less traffic. Life is good then.

<>And being Governor, DeSantis has a team in place he can bring to Washington, that's something Trump never had.<>

That is lost on most people. Our Framers had hoped that talented and apolitical ministers would serve across several administrations. Had that been the case, our wonderful President Trump wouldn't have had to put up with thousands of anti-American criminal leftovers from Bammy's regime.

Can’t wait until some BurnLootMurder and fascist Antifa types in Florida try to stop and damage a car in the middle of the road and end up getting tread marks on their backsides.
