Michigan announced the current mask rule will now include children age 2 to 4 years old, according to a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services release Friday.
“The change means that kids from 2-4 are now subject to the masking requirement just like everyone else,” MDHHS Public Information Officer Bob Wheaton wrote in an email statement. “So if an 18 year old would be required to mask because they were in a gathering at a park, so would a 2-4 year old”
As the surge of coronavirus cases continues in Michigan, a younger demographic has been part of the increase. The expansion to children age 2 and up will take effect April 26.
The decision comes at recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“We know that wearing a mask significantly reduces the spread of infection and should be part of the comprehensive strategy to reduce COVID-19—including for children age 2 and up,” said Matthew Hornik, President of the Michigan chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “Use of masks does not restrict oxygen in the lungs even in children, it is recommended to wear a mask with layers to filter droplets effectively.”
The release encourages child care facilities and camps to make a good faith effort to get these young children to wear masks.
The current MDHHS order on gatherings and masks was also extended to May 24.

Went to a mall here in western Colorado today. At least half the people were mask-less, young and old. Employees still have to wear them though.

So I’m planning a family reunion to Michigan in July. We’re coming from Texas where we don’t have mask requirements. What are we likely to expect when we start interacting in public places? I’d hate to be thrown in Whitmer’s gulag just because I don’t wear a mask.

I have family up there and go up three or four times a year. It is surreal up there. EVERYONE wears a mask. I don't. You can get away with it in most stores but don't be surprised if you are the only one. It is like nazi germany...people are scared. All they think about and talk about is covid. Covid messages are on all the billboards. You hear it on radio and tv all the time. Very weird.
